FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
RELEASE No. 20080412-02
April 12, 2008
Coalition forces return fire after complex attack in Sadr City (Baghdad)
3rd BCT PAO, 4th Inf. Div.
Multi-National Division Baghdad PAO
BAGHDAD Multi-National Division Baghdad soldiers, in a combined operation with Iraqi Army soldiers, killed several criminals in eastern Baghdad after their convoy was attacked by multiple road side bombs, and small-arms fire from adjacent high rise buildings April 11.
At approximately 9 p.m., soldiers from 1st Combined Arms Battalion, 68th Armor Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division soldiers, supporting Iraqi Army soldiers from the 42nd Brigade, 11th IA Div., killed two criminal snipers, two criminals firing rocket propelled grenades, and multiple others from a nearby building where soldiers were taking RPG and machine gun fire.
At the same time, soldiers from 1st CAB, 68th AR were transporting barriers, in support of Iraqi Army soldiers establishing a checkpoint, when two vehicles in the convoy were damaged when they struck more than six improvised explosive devices.
Small-arms fire, including sniper fire, machine-gun fire and RPGs were fired from buildings overlooking the road. Iraqi Army soldiers and 1-68 AR soldiers immediately returned fire with 7.62mm and 25mm small arms, killing at least four Special Groups members.
Secondary explosions were observed from the building immediately after, possibly indicating arms and munitions were stored in the building.
Small-arms fire continued to come from nearby buildings until 1st CAB, 68th AR engaged the buildings with two 122mm rounds from a M1A2 Abrams tank, killing two criminals and ending the small-arms attack.
At approximately 10:20 p.m., Airmen assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd BCT, operating an unmanned aerial vehicle reconnaissance platform identified three criminals emplacing additional IEDs.
The UAV fired one Hellfire missile, killing all three criminals.
The most important part about what happened is that this was a combined mission, only two vehicles were damaged, no U.S. or Iraqi Army soldiers were seriously injured, and we went on to complete our mission, said Maj. John Gossart, executive officer, 1st CAB, 68th AR, 3rd BCT, 4th Inf. Div.
We are ever vigilant against criminals who commit random acts of violence and we will relentlessly hunt down these criminals who hide among Iraqs law-abiding people.

France calls for “international force” against maritime piracy
TOKYO - France calls for the creation of an “international force” under a UN mandate to combat acts of piracy at sea, such as the diversion of Ponant by Somalis, said Saturday french Prime Minister Francois Fillon you! a visit to Japan.
“We are going to ask that under UN mandate an international force, to which France is naturally ready to participate, to work towards the safety and security of maritime transport in the region, as in the Malacca Strait,” said M . Fillon in a speech before the French Japan, on the french warship “Mistral”, with a stopover in Tokyo.
Jean-David Levitte, the diplomatic adviser of Nicolas Sarkozy told the press Friday that the french president proposed an “international effort” to combat piracy at sea, without specifying that it was the introduction of a strength.
Mr. Fillon also indicated that the commando operation against french Somali pirates once came ashore after payment of the sum of money claimed, “has helped recover half of the ransom.
Sources close the dossier had reported Friday the recovery of a portion of the ransom paid by the owner of the three towers.
The crew of the sailboat Ponant, who was on board a warship french, is expected soon to Djibouti, from where it returns to France by plane.
Reading some of those translations before morning CSP (Coffee Satiation Point) makes my teeth hurt.
Still, I don’t read much but English, plus a *little* German and Spanish, so I’ll just have to drink more coffee sooner.
placemark
The simple translation (and I haven’t had my coffee yet either — I was out working in the garden); is that in my opinion, piracy is not only a crime; it seems to be (at least in some cases) possibly terrorism financing.
...and as to your post ditto (except add some Italian to the German and Spanish).
I agree with you Vel, it does seem like there is more to the message considering the time line of “indefinitely”. Please keep us posted on this.
Staph superbug in pork?!? Thanks for the post MamaD.
Good for Rep. Hunter. Wish he had been a viable presidential candidate. Thanks for that post Cindy.

“Several dead in Iran mosque blast”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Eight people have been killed and 66 others wounded in an explosion in the southern Iranian city of Shiraz, a national news agency has reported.
The explosion on Saturday was caused by “a powerful bomb at Shiraz’s Mosque of the Martyrs after evening prayers”, a report by Fars news agency said, citing city officials.
The death toll is expected to rise due to the severity of some people’s injuries, officials said.
Mohamed Hasan al-Bahrani, Al Jazeera’s Tehran bureau chief, said that available information pointed to a bomb going off in the mosque after Maghreb and Isha prayers.
The explosion took place in the section where males were praying, according to reports.
Fars said the force of the blast shook houses more than a kilometre away.
No group or individual has claimed responsibility for the explosion.”
Yep, he does a good job.
