I think that Home Depot has three way, or corner fittings.

This would allow a vertical to connect at right angles with a top plane. Ordinary T fittings can be used to provide intermediate horizontals.

I would use 1 1/2 or 2” schedule 40 PVC pipe. You can be creative and use steel rod for the intermediate horizontals if the all pipe design seems to heavy looking.

If you go to home depot to look, they have lots of prefinished shelving that would make a good top. Ditto bathroom cabinet tops with formica.

Just a few thoughts....

PVC pipe takes spray paint well.

By the way, bert ... (glad to have you with us!)

As a prominent contributor to the Undead Thread, and prime suspect regarding the Flying Castle, it gives me great pleasure to belatedly recognize your recent tenth anniversary on Free Republic.

Don't be a stranger.
