I always liked Agnew and was sorry he got into trouble.

To avoid jumping from the frying pan into the fire mass media first destroyed Agnew before it took down Nixon.

Yes. And Nixon let Agnew twist in the wind. It's something I never quite understood-- I met Nixon and talked with Nixon, and while I hold that he was among our most socialistic Presidents who did great damage to the Union, if he had one defining personal characteristic it was his steadfast loyalty to his friends. His abandonment of Agnew wasn't something I would have expected from him. There may be a backstory we haven't been told. Having said that, we lost a very promising leader when Agnew went down.
