Why Clinton won't quit
The Boston Globe ^ | April 17, 2008 | Dan Payne

REGARDLESS of what happens Tuesday in the Democratic presidential primary in Pennsylvania, Hillary Clinton will not quit. Call it Divine Right or chutzpah, the Clintons believe she is entitled to the presidency. They've been planning it since their days at Yale. more stories like this

They are also convinced Barack Obama will be clobbered in a general election, on a par with George McGovern and Michael Dukakis.

Ties that bind. Clinton campaign leaders regard quitting as an admission that they couldn't elect a once-sure thing. Think of it: No interviews on the Sunday talk shows. No best table at the best DC restaurant. And no Redskins tickets.

Geoff Garin, her new strategist, won't want to fold the tents anytime soon. He just got started.

Exactly. The Clintons will cede the nomination only if they are sure they can't steal it first.

This is a good point. BHO is the most radical member of the Senate, and would be the most radical president, maybe EVER. Even FDR wasn’t beholden to Black Liberation Theology or anything like it (now, Elenor is a different story...).

A political strategist like Bill Clinton sees that the voting populous is still moderate. Winning is about co-opting opposition issues until those not paying attention vote for you. Bill chose crime and the economy, and won.
The Clintons see the unfairness of the press’ treatment of BHO and figure that they will eventually turn on him once his radical positions become known.

What has surprised me over the last 12 months is, it seems a unity ticket is getting furthur apart.

It may be more than just Black Liberation Theology...

Obama: Man of the World

Mr. Obama recalled the opening lines of the Arabic call to
prayer, reciting them with a first-rate accent. In a remark that
seemed delightfully uncalculated [...], Mr. Obama described the
call to prayer as "one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at
sunset."

The reason Hillary will not quit is she can always cry FOUL over Florida and Michigan. Karl Rove has said that Obama should take a risk and give Hillary Michigan and Florida delegates because he could do so and still have the delegate lead. Rove may be trying to create some mischief, but with the Florida-Michigan going unsettled, it does gives her a fairly defensive position to fall back on for staying in the race.

The author's reasoning is sound but there is another factor he fails to mention. Clinton won't quit because she wants to keep on raising money. The campaign has huge debts, including 5 mil owed to her. She's not going to quit until she gets her money back.

A unity ticket may still be possible if Obama gets the nomination. McCain/Clinton

The Clintons can’t quit because its the end if they do, they will both be failed has-beens cast into the political outer darkness. I simply cannot imagine the beast and billy up and quitting when there is even the slightest chance to pull it off. We all need to brace for the coming riots, it seems virtually guaranteed they will occur.

It’s win win for her.

Staying in accomplishes much for her.

She has a longshot she can get the nomination.

If not, she hurts Obama and helps McCain win, thus she runs again in 2012.

Another four years is nothing to Hillary.
She knows candidates often have to try twice.

The reason the Clintons won’t quit is alluded to in their tax returns, their foundation, and their library. From the moment Bill became a former president, and Hillary the heir apparent, people who want access to the president began “donating” to them, paying for their speeches, etc. If she doesn’t win, the best thing that happens to them is that the money spigot gets shut off. It might get worse. You don’t just take that kind of money and take a dive in the first round.

Obama's gaffe in San Francisco, saying people in small-town America are bitter about their circumstance, is largely true.

Eh, this is not the whole story. Obama blamed the bitterness for their 'clinging to religion and gun'. That's the main problem with his statement.

“Eh, this is not the whole story.”

And the problem wasn’t Michele saying “for the first time I’m REALLY proud of my country”, it was “proud of my country” period. The media has been laying down heavy, heavy smokescreen for Obama. Trying to boil down his inflamatory comment to the word bitter, which had nothing at all even vaguely to do with why his comment was offensive, is just more of the same.

Exactly right.

People should realize that if she wins Pennsylvania, her victory speech will most certainly remind America that she is due her Florida and Michigan delegates to "add to the voices of Pennsylvania" or some stuff like that.

I truly believe she will win Pennsylvania, and I truly believe she will really start making public appeals for Florida and Michigan soon thereafter.

North Carolina will probably go to Obama, unfortunately.
