My wife is in the field of educational consulting, and she has the data to back up my feeling that more money is spent on “special education” than on gifted student education. On a per pupil basis, there is no comparison.

Now certainly we have an obligation to educate special needs children, but it seems to me that a gifted student has the potential of making an outstanding contribution to our society, and we should put at least as many resources into educating our best students as our most challenged students.

I think that if we looked at it on a return on investment basis we might change our priorities.
