Trigger in heparin deaths confirmed - Contaminant set off allergic-like reactions.
***************************EXCERPT INTRO**********************
A contaminant found in tainted heparin, the blood-thinner drug that has been linked to dozens of deaths, can trigger severe adverse reactions all by itself, researchers report.
In one study released today, researchers confirm the presence of the chemical, known as oversulphated chondroitin sulphate, in suspect batches of heparin1. Another study found that the compound seems to trigger in pigs the same symptoms that have been seen in patients treated with the contaminated drug2.
We show that the contaminated heparin activates two inflammatory pathways, causing severe allergic reactions and low blood pressure, says bioengineer Ram Sasisekharan of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, who led both studies.
The results bolster the findings of the US Food and Drug Administration, which has been investigating the possibility that oversulphated chondroitin sulphate may be responsible for at least 62 deaths in the United States since November. On Monday, the agency announced that tainted heparin had also been distributed to ten other countries. An investigation of heparin supplier Changzhou SPL of Changzhou, China, and associated US distributors is ongoing. Baxter International, which distributed the drug in some of the early cases, recalled all its heparin products at the end of February.

The French jailed onew of their elite who allowed blood to be tainted by Aids. Too bad Americans can’t put away those responsible for sacrificing ordinary Amenricans for personal gain.
Translation: “It was intentional and done in China. The Baxter Board of Directors believe this is the best explanation that might distract jurors from our failure to text the products we sell.”
“Baxter recently recalled the blood thinner after it found batches made at a Chinese plant were contaminated with a substance similar to the drug’s active ingredient that has been linked to at least 81 deaths.”
If we outsource to save money, but we have to run QC because they do not, are we really saving anything?
Or, is the problem that China has us in an import-stranglehold?
There are things that can be outsourced, like clothing and electronics, and things that shouldn’t be, like food and medicine! I hope the inevitable lawsuits will wake them up.
There’s another recall going.

Recalled because of possible double dosed tablets.
(That leads me to believe it’s not Chinese. If it was Chinese related, it would be either impotent or adulterated)
A way of shielding liability, blame the other guys.
Interesting. Deliberately contaminated, Bob? Who? When? What lot? Where? Why?
I wondered about that.
Heparin contaminated 'on purpose'
*******************************************
America's drugs watchdog believes that Chinese-made ingredients for a blood-thinning drug may have been deliberately contaminated. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said earlier that a chemical contaminant had been found in some batches of the drug heparin. It has linked the contaminant to hundreds of severe allergic reactions and dozens of deaths across the US. An FDA director said when and how the toxin had been introduced was unclear. "FDA's working hypothesis is that this was intentional contamination, but this is not yet proven," Director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research Janet Woodcock told a congressional hearing. Heparin is used in kidney dialysis and in some types of surgery to prevent blood clots. 'Deliberate scheme' The contaminated stocks were made by Baxter International, using China-based suppliers. According to the FDA, a chemical called oversulphated chondroitin sulphate has been found in supplies in 13 countries. Baxter International Chief Executive Robert Parkinson said the company was "alarmed that one of our products was used in what appears to have been a deliberate scheme to adulterate a life-saving medication". The company has recalled the heparin and imports from the Chinese supplier have been blocked. Chinese officials have acknowledged the presence of the contaminant. But they say it is not to blame for the allergic reactions or deaths, citing a lack of incidents in more than 10 other countries which have received the same contaminated stocks. |
