FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
RELEASE No. 20080503-02
May 3, 2008

MND-B soldiers kill criminals, protect the Iraqi people (Baghdad)

Multi-National Division – Baghdad PAO

BAGHDAD – Multi-National Division – Baghdad soldiers and their Iraqi Security Forces partners engaged criminal elements May 2 in the Sadr City district of Baghdad, as they continue to provide security for the law-abiding people of Iraq.

At approximately 7:20 a.m., MND-B soldiers observed a criminal on a rooftop with an AK-47. The soldiers engaged and killed the criminal.

At approximately 12:30 p.m., an air weapons team engaged a house adjacent to the Ubaydi neighborhood, with a Hellfire missile after an explosivelyformed penetrator triggerman was identified. The criminal was killed in the engagement.

Afterward, the two EFPs, that he was the triggerman for, were recovered.

At approximately 12:45 p.m., MND-B Soldiers, in the same area, engaged a group of heavily-armed criminals after they fled into a house. An M1A1 Abrams tank engaged the criminals with one round from its main gun.

They reengaged the criminals after Iraqi Army soldiers reported being attacked by small-arms fire from the same house again.

Three criminals were killed in the engagements.

An air weapons team then engaged the house with 30 mm guns and a Hellfire missile. Following the final engagement, the attacks ceased.

At approximately 3 p.m. an MND-B Soldier killed a criminal who was carrying an illegal weapon commonly used by snipers.

At approximately 5:20 p.m., a fixed-wing aircraft used precision-guided munitions and killed two criminals and destroyed a mortar tube.

MND-B soldiers provided positive identification of the building housing the criminals and the weapon.

“The Special Groups criminal is nothing more than a heavily-armed street thug who uses innocent civilians as shields for their activity,” said Lt. Col. Steve Stover, MND-B and 4th Inf. Div. spokesman. “We know who the key leaders are. Habitually, these evil men use intimidation and threats of violence against the Iraqi people in order to hide amongst the civilian population. Iraqi Security and Coalition forces will not rest until we bring them to justice.”
