Israeli police discovered suspicious substance near U.S. consulate
2008-05-02

JERUSALEM -- Israeli police discovered a suspicious package near the U.S. consulate in Jerusalem Friday afternoon, before using a robot to neutralize it. At least five claps like gunshots were heard after police sent out a bomb disposal robot to handle the package near the back gate of the U.S. agency, said a Xinhua photographer who lived nearby.

Residents in the area were told to stay at home before police lifted the alert about half an hour later and left the scene which is also near to King David Hotel, in which U.S. President George W. Bush stayed during his visit to Israel in January. Police at the scene refused to comment, and calls to the Israel Police spokesperson's cellphone were unanswered. Israeli security officials have warned that intelligence has been detected indicating possible massive attacks during the Jewish state's 60th anniversary celebrations, part of which Bush is to attend in mid-May.

Bomb shakes Malmö apartment building (Sweden)
2 May 08 08:26

A powerful bomb exploded in the stairwell of an apartment building on Falsterbogatan in Malmö early Friday morning. The explosion was strong enough to blow in doors to apartments pn every floor of the entryway. There were no reports of injuries, but many residents were in a state of shock.

"I was woken up by a loud explosion," said Johanna Knutsson to the TT news agency. The bomb was placed just outside her apartment door. "The door was lying in the hallway and there was debris everywhere and smoke. It was totally unbelievable," she said.

Investigative Project Releases Gov't Memos Curtailing Speech in War on Terror
by Steven Emerson
May 2, 2008

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is refusing to identify the "influential Muslim Americans" and "leading U.S.-based scholars and commentators on Islam" who met with Secretary Michael Chertoff in helping shape a softer approach to government lexicon about terrorists and their ideological motivations.

"Our policy is we don't comment on the Secretary's private schedule," spokeswoman Amy Kudwa told the IPT. Nor would she identify any of the participants' organizational affiliation.

DHS and the State Department's Counterterrorism Communications Center each issued reports urging government employees to avoid words like "jihad," "mujahedeen" or any reference to Islam or Muslims, especially in relation to Al Qaeda. The Investigative Project on Terrorism is making the documents available for the first time here and here.

“Hezbollah in airport spying row”
By Jim Muir
BBC News, Beirut

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The allegation levelled by leaders of the government is that Hezbollah set up a hidden, remote-controlled camera in a container park overlooking the main runway of Beirut’s international airport.

A newspaper that supports the government, an-Nahar, published documents in which the Lebanese Army’s intelligence agency purportedly confirms that the camera was spotted in the last week of April, apparently directed at the runway, but was removed by three men in civilian clothing before it could be impounded.

The accusation is that the radical Shia movement, which controls the suburbs where the airport is located, was spying on air traffic in preparation for a possible attack, perhaps aimed at assassinating one of the prominent pro-government figures who fly in and out of the facility.”
