SASABE, Mexico: The sandy streets of Sasabe are empty. Migrant smugglers have to hunt for business at border-town shelters. Deported migrants give up after one try, taking their government up on free bus rides home.
A U.S. crackdown is causing the longest and most significant drop in illegal migration from Mexico since the Sept. 11 attacks. Officials say the U.S. economic downturn, tighter security and a more perilous and expensive journey are persuading many who try to sneak into the U.S. to give up sooner.
Border Patrol arrests are down 17 percent so far this year along the U.S.-Mexico border after falling 20 percent all of last fiscal year and 8 percent the year before that. While it's impossible to know how many people are crossing illegally, the Patrol uses apprehensions to estimate the ebb and flow of traffic.
The downturn in illegal immigration has created labor shortages throughout the United States and several states are considering temporary-worker programs, especially in agricultural fields, where produce is going bad.
Mexicans in the U.S. are starting to send less money home, too.
Remittances soared in the early part of the decade to become Mexico's largest source of foreign income after oil exports. But they rose just 1 percent in 2007, reaching US$24 billion ((15.8 billion) and in the first quarter this year, they slipped almost 3 percent from the same period last year, Mexico's central bank said this week.
Adolfo Vasquez, a 41-year-old corn farmer from southern Mexico, picked fruit for three years in Washington state. Last year it took him two tries to get to his job. This year, he walked for four nights before U.S. Border Patrol agents caught him. He doesn't plan to try again.
"It's very disheartening because every time it gets twice as difficult," said Vasquez, resting...

This is VERY good news-if we can’t fence ‘em out, let’s starve ‘em out.
Ping!
If you want on, or off this S. Texas/Mexico ping list, please FReepMail me.
And this is considered proof by what ever % they use? Laughable!
That's "arrests" that are down 17 percent. I want hard numbers on the "ones that got away" before believing there's been the slightest slow down.
“The downturn in illegal immigration has created labor shortages throughout the United States and several states are considering temporary-worker programs, especially in agricultural fields, where produce is going bad.”
Hmmm, rotting produce? I live in SoCal and haven’t heard a word about rotting produce. Hasn’t hit the front page of the LA Slimes yet here in Sensitivity Central.
Agreed!
Eggxactly, Picklezz!
Look, is ANYONE saying that Border crossings (IE “the Invasion”) have changed? NO! Now, let’s assume that there are 40 million illegals in the U.S. and let’s say that 3,000 per day are leaving the U.S. for their country of Mexico, where they belong. If 5,000 to 10,000 Mexicans and others in Mexico are being smuggled or enter otherwise illegally into the U.S. EVERY DAY, then the net loss of illegals is actually AN INCREASE! Anyone who knows the Border knows that 5,000 to 10,000 are breaking in every 24 hours. Think about it! That’s an enormous figure, even 5,000!!
What IS most DEFINITELY happening is illegals are leaving states like GA and OK for Texas, Kansas and CA where there are no anti-Invasion laws. But leaving for their poor home countries? Not enough of them to make a difference.
Hope they aren’t using Butch Reno’s unfounded crime formula to compile this data........
One thing I’ll never take at face value are govt. estimates of illegal crossings.
When the crops start rotting in the fields and we’re paying through the nose even more for produce, maybe will realize we need these workers in some legal form or fashion.
I’ve never seen anything that has been as shortsighted as this.
I think we are at last starting to see the U.S border security people doing their job-- what they should have done in the first place. It doesn't take much to discourage these Mexicans from entering illegaly, but you have to do SOMETHING to defend your land. You've got to put up road blocks and solid high fences to keep them out, and those who get through have to be actively deported or prosecuted, as required by law.
Just telling them "Please don't cross over the border illegaly, or else you might be arrested" is not good enough if it's not acted on.
BARF
Meanwhile, a quarter mile either side of Sasabe, pickup trucks and vans are crammed with 10X their design load in illegal aliens, and are traveling cross country.
The tag line ain’t a joke. 4 dead, 30 injured, and as many as 20 running loose after a single vehicle crash near Arizona city this week.
And this is bad, how ??????
