POLL: Voters notice Franken's tax troubles

Election day is exactly six months from Sunday and Minnesota’s U.S. Senate race will be one of the most closely watched in the nation.

DFL candidate Al Franken jumpstarted his campaign with a rally the day before Republican Norm Coleman officially announced his reelection bid. Since then, headlines have not been kind to Franken. First, a $25,000 fine for not paying workers’ compensation insurance in New York. Then he revealed he is paying $70,000 in back taxes, penalties and interest to 17 states.

In the latest SurveyUSA poll about Franken's tax troubles, 500 people were polled.

Of those people, 59 percent said the recent troubles made them less likely to support Franken and 31 percent said it made no difference.

When asked whether Franken should withdraw from the race, 51 percent said he should withdraw while 38 said he should stay in the race.

Franken's campaign officials did not agree with the SurveyUSA polls, saying the question about his income tax situation should have made it clear that Franken says he overpaid taxes in his home states of Minnesota and New York. He also says he may have underpaid taxes in 17 states.

According to a separate SurveyUSA poll, Coleman now leads Franken by 10 points -- the same margin Coleman had in March. But since the last poll, Coleman has solidified his base with 99 percent of Republicans saying they support him. That’s up seven points.

Franken has support from 67 percent of Democrats, which is down eight points.

The SurveyUSA poll also showed a growth in support for another DFL candidate -- Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer. He trails Coleman by 19 points, which is 10 points closer than in the previous poll.

Minnesota is a real moonbat Midwestern state, along with Illinois and Wisconsin.

That's some rock solid support! We are going to win this race.

Minnesota is definately the moonbat state, its hard to figure out how such a generally rooted bunch of people keep electing loonies.

Wisconsin is simply a matter of Madison being the San Fran for people who didn’t have enough money to make it all the way to the west coast. Otherwise the states is about as conservative as you can get, outside of metro Milwaukee.

mini-soda, the state that elected a rassler, hubby hump-fries, paul wellstone, and many more moonbats.

The ones that want socialism should go back to sweden, norway and whichever euro-socialist country from which their ancestors came.

Their ancestors are rolling in their graves when they see what their children and grand-children have made of their beloved state of mini-soda.

The Scandinavian collectivist mindset is very ingrained in the culture here. Uffda! There’s a whole lot of supposed do-gooders attending dead Lutheran churches in Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Outstate tends to be a lot more conservative, but so go the cities, so goes the state.

It could just turn out that Al Franken’s bid for the US Senate may be his best piece of comedy ever, a performance-art masterpiece that uses the Minnesota DFL Party as the butt of the joke. After chasing the much-more electable Michael Cerisi out of the primary race earlier this year, a series of revelations about Franken’s business practices has the DFL wondering what hit them — and how to get out of the trap in which Franken has put

...the question...should have made it clear that Franken ... overpaid taxes in ... Minnesota and New York. [somehow justifying that...] He...underpaid ["evaded" might be a more correct term] taxes in 17 states.

Ah, the "logic" of someone who wants to be a senator, and to spend your money wisely, with no selfish conflicts...

Importantly, Franken wasn't clueless here. He thought he could get away with it, and hasn't the character or moral strength to do anything unselfish when he thinks no one's looking.

BTW, it's been in the news for years that several ball players have been nailed on tax evasion charges for autograph sessions in many non-home states. Ignorance is no excuse, but this is common knowledge.

Minnesota is a real moonbat Midwestern state

Aint it the truth. There is a core of looniness in Minneapolis and St. Paul, that when combined with hard-core union support along the iron range, makes it a very difficult environment for sane politicians. Keith Ellison's full blown support of CAIR, and his support of the terrorist probing mission pulled off by the Flying Imams at MSP, is actually a positive for him among many of his constituents.

If you think the federal office holders are bad, you should take a good look at the state house, especially the senate.

We also have a lot of voter fraud here which in a close election swings for dems. I'm waiting for the big quake to hit Madison.
