The makers of a small, digital camera that attaches to the barrel of a gun say the device would have ended any dispute about what happened in the Sean Bell shooting.
Now, a former Bronx homicide prosecutor who helped develop the Pistol Cam wants the NYPD to consider putting the audio and video gadget on its service weapons.

sounds more like a solution looking for a crises. we kinda have an idea where the guns were pointing when bell was shot.
I think the YouTube people are going to be pretty happy about this little innovation. Actually, I’m all for keeping the activities of our law enforcers as transparent and visible as possible...if they’re not doing anything wrong, they shouldn’t have anything to worry about, right? At least that’s what they always tell us mere citizens.
“... once more putting the GOOD guys at a disadvantage...”
I agree 100%. It’s a Monday morning quarterback device, which is quaranteed to convict law enforcement officers.
As long as it is unobtrusive and doesn’t effect the weapon at all I think this is a great idea.
Dash board cams have helped both sides of the isle get to the truth of many situations. I think that some police officers have gotten much more professional after they were installed and there is a record of their actions, this just takes it one step further.
There will always be two sides of every shooting, but this might make a big difference to a lot of the race-baiters like Sharpton and Jackson who feed off of the chaos that a lot of these bring.
Stay alert out there guys, the high command does NOT have your back!
Ruefully!
I agree, that the "Faces Of Death" crowd will love this.
Never EVER film police with your pistol cam.
I don’t know how good the view will be after the flash goes off and other scenarios develop.
It will probably film COPS having bad muzzle awareness and showing how crazy the fog of war is.
Any chance this little device might physically interfere with an officer’s ability to quickly access their service firearm in a time of need? Or, any chance the device might interfere with their psychological decision making in pulling their service firearm? Aren’t LEO’s under enough constraints as it is?
Then when a cop offing some thug is proven justified, the left can whine about how the NYPD edited the video!
I agree. My main problem with police heavy-handedness involves issues where there is sufficient time to analyze their actions before undertaking them. Things as bullying, illegal entry, and other issues. I don’t think that cops generally shoot folks who haven’t earned it. It has happened, agreed, but I think that this move is really pointless and only harms the police’s ability to do what they do best—stop dangerous perps in a split-second.
If anything, a camera mounted along the sight plane of the pistol would result in guns drawn more often and directly pointed at “suspects” sooner than occurs today to ensure that the events are captured on camera.
I would imagine in the Bell shooting the time between guns drawn and guns fired was very quick and the camera would not have captured what made the officer fear for his/their life, only the results of the decision to shoot.
The way some LEO's shoot, it will be more likely...Why is he shooting at the ground? Tree, sky, side of the building...?
You make a good point.
Speaking of the draw, I’m afraid this will be slowed by the extra equipment.
