Grass that may help tackle global warming by cutting the level of methane given off by cows is being developed by scientists reports the latest issue of the Society of Chemical Industrys (SCI) magazine Chemistry & Industry.
Scientists at Gramina, a joint biotech venture by Australias Molecular Plant Breeding Cooperative Research Centre and New Zealand rural services group PGG Wrightson Genomics, are developing a grass that will not only cut the amount of methane cows burp up when chewing the cud but also grow in hotter climes.
This means that farmers should be able to maintain dairy herds productivity and profitability in the face of a changing climate, while cutting down their gaseous burps and reducing their contribution to global warming.

Somehow , this old farmboy don’t think most farmers give a rat’s arse about their contribution towards reducing global warming, just a hunch.

Well no doubt EPA will soon have a Cow Methane Measurement Division.

Ummm - I thought bovine methane came from the other end of the animal, not the burping end.
It would be more beneficial to figure out how to capture those farts and convert them to fuel to power machinery that spews out tons of CO2. Then the CO2 would feed plants that feed the beef that produce the fuel that powers the machines ....

No problem. I was probably emitting methane when I tried.

Dang, I guess that puts Burpee out of business.

But doesn’t the solid output already adequately feed the plants that feed the beef that............. If you captured or prevented the farts that partially combine with the output and push it out to feed the plants that feed the beef, what effect would the flap of a butterfly’s wings in Singapore have on global warming?

That may be, Corporate farms especially, there aren’t many ma and pa ‘steads that can afford to play that game ,, better to just sell and move ..

And in no time at all - one for humans! What an opportunity for genetic engineering - for beast and prey! If they can engineer burp-less grass surely burp-less beans won't be far behind... Maybe they can engineer 'beano' for cows.
