One bellwether event was the tragic case of Terry Schiavo, a brain-dead Florida woman attached to a feeding tube. Her husband wanted to let her die, and her parents did not; keeping her alive had become a rallying point for the religious right. According to a leaked strategy memo written by a senior staffer for Sen. Mel Martinez (R-Fla.), congressional Republicans thought the case would be a great political issue because the pro-life base will be excited by it. Republican legislators and President Bush rushed back to Washington on Palm Sunday in 2005 to pass a law preventing the removal of Schiavos feeding tube. As the courts promptly ruled that the tube could be removed anyway, polls showed Americans disapproved of Washingtons intervention by almost 2 to 1....

But I guess I shouldnt be surprised since these are the same type of conservatives who passed federal legislation to interfere in the marriage contract between Terri and Michael Schiavo, taking away the rights of an individual to make medical decisions for his incapacitated spouse and giving those rights to the government. The fact is that the issue of gay marriage in Missouri has been settled, and its ban is now part of our constitution. It will not be revisited any time soon, and for all practical purposes it is a dead issue....
