SAN FRANCISCO - A deeply divided California Supreme Court legalized gay marriage in an opinion issued Thursday morning.

Wild cheers echoed throughout City Hall and other spots where proponents had gathered Thursday morning awaiting the opinion, which came on a 4-3 vote.

The case stems from challenges to state law by gay couples who were married in ceremonies at San Francisco City Hall in 2004, when Mayor Gavin Newsom began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Legal challenges to those marriages eventually led to the high court invalidating them six months later. California voters already had approved by a wide margin a measure in 2000 that declared marriage to be only between a man and a woman.

But opponents of gay marriage denounced the opinion, saying the court had gone too far and that California voters would make the ultimate decision through an initiative being pushed that would amend the state constitution to ban same-sex marriage.

I just love the way the media uses words. How can something that doesn't exist in the first place be banned?

its almost to the point (if it isn't already) that its an embarrassment to be an American anymore.....the world is sitting out there laughing at us.

It's almost to the point where I'm thinking this isn't my country, anymore. But, sadly, most of the rest of the Western world supports these progressive movements. They are just as bad, if not worse. Europeans used to laugh at us for being so "prudish". Now we're headed down the same toilet with them.

you might even see Gerald Fitzpatrick and Patrick Fitzgerald the two gay Irishmen!

They only want one wedding present: 8-year-old Paddy O'Furniture.

this depresses me very much...

but the bad news is that it will quickly be used to sue churches to go along with the law, and the media will go out of their way to lable Christians who oppose it as bigotry..

Persecution is coming...prayers needed.

I'm with you Doc, but even though we may lose the battle, we Christians will never lose the war!!
