Press Releases Contact: Brendan Daly/Nadeam Elshami 202-226-7616 For Immediate Release 05/15/2008 Pelosi Statement on California State Supreme Court Ruling on Gay Marriage

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in reaction to the California Supreme Court’s decision today to strike the state ban on gay marriage:

“I welcome the California Supreme Court’s historic decision. I have long fought against discrimination and believe that the State Constitution provides for equal treatment for all of California’s citizens and families, which today’s decision recognizes.

“I commend the plaintiffs from San Francisco for their courage and commitment. I encourage California citizens to respect the Court’s decision, and I continue to strongly oppose any ballot measure that would write discrimination into the State Constitution.

“Today is a significant milestone for which all Californians can take pride.”

Why not? Pelosi does not want to do the will of the people so I fully expect her to support a court ruling that is AGAINST the overwhelming majority of the state and the country. This is modern liberalism.

Were Californians misguided to belief that voting on a proposition would be the best way to reflect majority will concerning one man, one woman-only marriage when they should have directed their efforts to having their constitution amended?

This is discriminatory.

I am single. Why can't I have the “rights and benefits of marriage”?

Do Senators Obama and Clinton agree with Speaker Pelosi’s statement? If they do, why? If they do not, why not?

Do I think anybody will hold their feet to this fire? I do not.

I encourage California citizens to respect the Court’s decision

instead of the initiative that an overwhelming majority of those same citizens passed a couple of years ago.

Hey stupid woman, shut the F up.

That's what I say every time I see her in front of the camera. I can not believe the stupidity of that woman.

BEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE REPUBLICAN PARTY IN 2008 is this RULING.

It will be the deciding factor in the US election, and possibly even turn California Republican.

A statement from a “practicing” Catholic - as long as it doesn’t get in the way of her politics.

She just gave a lot of ammo to the GOP with this. Gay marriage is officially in issue in the 2008 elections. Stupid foolish people on the California Supreme Court.

Ugh is right, but I am actually shocked that this issue is being accepted so easily already. I thought that we would have complete gay marriage in 10 years (just see the direction of the country), but now I believe that we will have legal gay marriage within 5 years. America is really something lately!

So now that marriage means nothing, it won't be long before human and animals can be married. And why not have multiple wives or husbands? There's no longer any definition of “marriage” to prevent it. It is now arbitrary.

Has anyone anticipated that legal skirmish such as division property rights and who gets the children of the couple?
++++++++++++++++++++
Those issues are already in play with California’s domestic partnership laws which basically treat DP the same as marriage when it comes to divorce, property rights, custody issues etc. I doubt if we’ll see any change except there will be more publicity.
