GOP cancer: Party could lose 20 more (House) seats
Politico ^ | May 15, 2008 | JOHN F. HARRIS & JOSH KRAUSHAAR

For the past 18 months, ever since the 2006 elections, congressional Republicans have been like a hospital patient trying to convince visitors that he is not really all that sick: a bit under the weather; actually feel better than I sound; should be up and about any day; thanks for asking.

Suddenly — belatedly — all pretense is gone.

The Republican defeat in Tuesday’s special election in Mississippi, in a deeply conservative district where, in an average year, Democrats cannot even compete, was a clear sign that the GOP has the political equivalent of cancer that has spread throughout the body. Many House GOP operatives are privately predicting that the party could easily lose up to 20 seats this fall.

Combined with the 30 seats that the GOP lost in 2006, that would leave the party facing a 70-vote deficit against Democrats in the House — a state of powerlessness reminiscent of Republicans’ long wilderness years in the 1960s and ’70s.

Good points. You can't do it that way, though.

The way to accomplish what you want is by ATTACKING. You can't make "your" good points and "set things right." There isn't enough time. You have to go on offense, everyone on the same page, and attack by name.

See, this is what Bush, and by extension, all of the GOP, refused to do: attack Dems by name. They should have been saying in 2003, "Tom Daschle is a traitor who is trying to kill our soldiers." Or today, "Nancy Pelosi is an incompetent who is burning up American tax dollars and causing YOU to pay $4 a gallon of gas."

Say this not once, or twice, but have EVERY Republican who is interviewed in any setting hammer Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Barack Obama. Roman Senator Cato used to end every speech, no matter the subject, with the same phrase, "Carthage must be destroyed," so no one would forget what the #1 priority was. We need to have that same focus.

at the chubby little feet of ...Karl Rove...the man who made sure the GOP stood for pretty much nothing at all.

Interesting. It goes well beyond Karl Rove but I've had the same feeling about him and the set manipulations.

The Republicans are totally incapable of communicating any conservative principles (individual citizen responsibility) whatsoever. The major media are a big part of that, completely (and conspiratorally) shutting out any lucid clarification of conservatism, individual responsibility, or what made America free. But even in the Republican emails there is only negativism and nihilism.

I teach, and young minds, altho on the surface striving to be rebellious for personal identity, will trend to the way they are led, like in say "Communism."

Don’t lay the blame of the gutless, spineless republican failures on the media. This crap is self-inflected.

I can’t believe I missed that line. “Local issues”?! Wasn’t that the strategy in 2006? Wow, that worked out so great, lets try it again!

Instead of trying to “liberate themselves from their national party label”, why not take it back? But that would involve taking responsibility for it, something Congressmen avoid like the plague. Besides, most of them are even more responsible than the President for soiling the name of the Republican Party.

The one silver lining this year will be a continued purge of the GOP. One can only hope we can take advantage of this at the grassroots level and put forth some worthy new candidates next time.

I apologize if I missed your greater point.

Knowing that even if McCain wins, it’ll mean very little in the larger scheme of things is frustrating.

The media is what it is, and while complaining about them is certainly justified, it is also useless. It’s a problem conservatives are just going to have to deal with, and it’s one they’ve had decades now to figure out.

It’s going to take more than good ideas. It’s going to take leadership, something that’s sorely lacking in the Republican Party and in the conservative movement right now.

Yeah Newt did us a big favor. After he got to be Speaker her started chasing skirt which compromised him completely. Although he was the leader we needed, he soon had to go to the darkside or be exposed.

The Republicans squandered their opportunity all these years after winning the House and the Senate.

A set of (hopefully wrong> predictions:

Demo's win Big in Nov, and pick up veto proof majorities in Both Houses, not that it will be needed, as Pres Obama will gladly go along with more...

Tightening of religious and right-talk broadcast freedom. Probable restrictions on such sites as FR

More taxes on income, capital gains, death, etc.

Climate Change bureaucracy will incur additional taxes on gasoline

Increased taxes on Oil Companies will increase gas cost further

New Uber-Liberal judges will be appointed, continuing the erosion of the Legislative and Executive branches powers...See CA decision today on gay marriage, and Pelosi's endorsement of same

Increased terrorist activity abroad, reaching our shores soon thereafter. More loss of personal freedom, restrictions on travel, eavesdropping, etc.

More PC legislation along the lines of "hate crimes"

Possible changes to the electoral college process, limitation on voter ID requirements at the state level, etc. How to get around the fact that this is a states rights issue will be as creative as they get.

Severe restrictions on firearms purchase and ownership.

Change in military procedures for recruiting, interrogation, rules of engagement, and gays.

Continued severe recession, erosion of the dollar, and even possible depression.

OK, so I'm cynical, and I desperately hope I'm WRONG!!! I am deeply saddened over the demise of our Constitutional Republic. Maybe we will see the rise of the "Constitution Party". Akin to castor oil, the sooner we take our medicine, the faster we get better - will be a tough 4 years and beyond, though!
