Moderator’s note:This was the first real thread reporting the news today. It was locked for reasons that should be obvious to everyone by now. The Moderator who locked it is the level-headed Mod. I am the arbitrary and capricious Mod. If you choose to martyr yourself I am happy to oblige.

US Senator Edward M. Kennedy, the veteran lawmaker from Massachusetts who is the last surviving brother in the legendary Kennedy family, has been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor, his doctors said today.

Specialists in Boston and around the country said the information released indicated that Kennedy has terminal cancer and might have only a limited time to live.

Can people leave their personal stuff aside on this thread?

May be asking a lot with that comment, but here's the prognosis:

WHO grading system for astrocytomas WHO Grade 1 — e.g., pilocytic astrocytoma WHO Grade 2 — e.g., diffuse or low-grade astrocytoma WHO Grade 3 — e.g., anaplastic (malignant) astrocytoma

WHO Grade 4 — glioblastoma multiforme (most common glioma in adults) The prognosis is the worst for grade 4 gliomas, with an average survival time of 12 months. Overall, few patients survive beyond 3 years.

From what I understand about Glioma Blastoma (my friend’s father just past away after 16 months) is that even when you go in to try to remove it, it is like a plant that shoots out its seed when touched, it “blasts” out cells to surrounding areas. My friend’s father had removal surgery, the gamma knife, chemo. He went down hill fast in the end. Very difficult. Prayers for his family.

My mother died of a glioblastoma, two months after her diagnosis.

Of course that was over 20 years ago; don’t know if treatments have improved.

Wish no ill will on the man, but urge his quick retirement.

Kennedy has done irreversible damage to this country with his Marixst policies and damaging statements about our military. That being said, I hope he lives the rest of his days in peace.

Twenty-five years ago my mother-in-law was diagnosed with a brain tumor. She was only 55 y.o. From diagnosis to her last breath was approximately only seven weeks.

Many medical advances have been made since then. I am praying for a better outcome for Senator Kennedy and his family.

No word of whether Ted would resign but right now on WBZ-TV
Boston they’re saying there would be a special election for
his seat (as their Jon Keller pointed out, in the past
the Gov. would appoint someone to serve in the interim
but they changed it in ‘04 when it looked like Kerry
would win. There was a GOP gov at that time, Romney)

IIRC Ted was elected to an umpteenth term in ‘06. Would
Ted hold on to the seat until his dying breath (even if
that took place several years from now) or would he step
down? Certainly they need more tests to see what the
course of action would be and maybe a decision will be
made to leave, if it looks extremely grim

It is said an Eastern monarch once charged his wise men to invent him a sentence, to be ever in view, and which should be true and appropriate in all times and situations. They presented him the words: "And this, too, shall pass away." How much it expresses! How chastening in the hour of pride! How consoling in the depths of affliction! -- Abraham Lincoln

I wouldn't be surprised to see Cadillac Deval appoint himself.

His District? He’s a Senator so that would be the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
