O'Reilly critic is fired from job at CN8
Boston Globe ^ | 05/22/08 | Carol Beggy and Mark Shanahan

CN8 host Barry Nolan , who publicly complained a few weeks ago about Bill O'Reilly receiving an award from the Boston chapter of National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, has been fired by the Comcast network. "Their take is that I was insubordinate," Nolan told us yesterday. "They wanted me to sit down and shut up." The host of "Backstage With Barry Nolan" had argued that O'Reilly, the volatile Fox News host and former Channel 7 anchor, was unworthy of the Governor's Award. (Past recipients include the likes of Mike Wallace, Ken Burns, and Natalie Jacobson.) "The idea of honoring someone who does their job with constant factual errors, name-calling, and mangling of the truth . . . It's ridiculous," said Nolan, who's married to Garland Waller, a veteran TV producer who teaches at Boston University. We're told Nolan was warned by his bosses at CN8 to pipe down, but at the May 10 dinner honoring O'Reilly he handed out a six-page document listing some of O'Reilly's wackier errors, utterances, and information about the talk-show host's sexual harassment settlement.

Seems Comcast was concerned that Nolan's actions could harm the network's relationships with the academy and Fox. He was immediately suspended without pay for two weeks and then fired over the phone Tuesday. CN8 spokeswoman Beth Bacha wouldn't say much yesterday, but she did confirm that Nolan is "no longer employed" by Comcast. "Backstage" will continue with Sara Edwards, she said. As for Nolan, who hosted "Hard Copy" in the '90s and later worked for "Extra!," he said he has no immediate plans: "I'm going to cook out on the grill and get my lawn looking good."

I am sure Bill has spent a few summer evenings in the bushes in the Fenway district!

He does not understand basic economics, free enterprise, or capitalism.

I hear that argument often regarding conservative pundits. What that really means is he doesn't agree with you so therefore he doesn't understand the topic. If only he were smart like you he would understand.

"O’Reilly could really mess with Nolan’s mind by going on the factor and defending Nolan’s right to criticize his award, and demand that Nolan be given back his job."

Nolan wasn't fired because he criticized O'Reilly. Nolan was fired for unprofessional conduct. Did you catch the bit about him hounding attendees at the dinner like a stalker? This guy let his Kos-style politics interfere with his job.

To use Bill O's other words:

Barry Nolan shouldn't be a Poppenjay or a Poppinjay.

I saw a post on the Herald web-site call him the local Olberman. Who knew CN8 had a 24 hour broadcast day? I only thought they were on the air if Boston College Hockey needed a TV outlet. Talk about a waste of electricity.

I’ll make out my check (actually, online payment) to Comcast
this month with a smile on my face.

Bill O'Reilly is not a conservative pundit. If he were smart like most businessmen and entrepreneurs who risk their own capital in forming, financing, and running a business, he would not echo Hillary Clinton on business matters pertaining to private enterprise, capitalism, and free markets... and TAXES.

I notice that you are a Ronald Reagan supporter. So am I. What you fail to understand is that Ronald Reagan believed in free markets, and less governmment intervention. Bill O'Reilly believes in taxing "obscene profits." There is no such thing as "oscene profits" any more than any one who is "too rich." Both are relative terms.

exactly
he and many others at FOX are very gay friendly. and lately FOX is going more and more to the left, especially fox and friends with the dumb fool brain kilmeade, and the clueless woman Gretchen.

the show has gone down hill since E.D. went and O Reilly has got boring with the usual same guests
