Chavez urges Colombian rebels to end struggle
MSNBC ^ | 6/8/08 | AP

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is urging Colombian rebels to lay down their weapons, free all their hostages and put an end to a decades-long armed struggle against Colombia's government.

Chavez says ongoing efforts by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, to overthrow Colombia's democratically elected government are unjustified.

"The guerrilla war is history," he said during his Sunday television and radio program.

The Venezuelan leader's statements could help to warm relations between Venezuela and Colombia that have been strained due to Colombia's allegations that Chavez might be aiding the FARC.

Chavez denies supporting the FARC. He says his contacts with the guerrillas were aimed at securing the release of rebel-held hostages.

Maybe Chavez is playing nice because his lib benefactors in America are fixing to be exposed!

Wonder if any names are associated with a certain candidate running for President of the United States?

It would not surprise this gal in the least!

I think Colombia had more than enough evidence to open up a can o' whoopass on Hugo. I wonder if the Venezuelan army would have fought, or if they would have stayed in their barracks and let Hugo get what's coming to him.

Thanks for the links. I’m sure that for Chavez the most likely reason he would abandon his FARC buddies is that he sees the writing on the wall for them anyway - he figures since they are no longer going to be useful to him, he might as well try to get “credit” for trying to bring about an end to their activities. OR it could simply be window-dressing, he may know that they’re not going to listen to him but again he can get “credit” for the statement. Either way, he obviously does not see FARC as useful to him anymore.

This is all just eye and ear wash after he got caught financing FARC big time. He is taking the NY Slimes advice to promise that he has changed and will never ever do that again if he is just give one more iddy biddy chance.

He is a complete communist dictator who wants to be the next Castroite disaster for the western hemisphere.

He is doing a pretty good job of screwing up Venezuela so far.

The computer files captured from Reyes show Hugo was up to his eyebalss supporting FARC. He knows the int’l community can’t ignore this ,so he is trying to pretend he is reforming his evil ways. Very transparent from the coaca chewing communist.

You are probably right. Reading more about it all just now. It looks like FARC has been pretty decimated over the last year and are losing the ‘battle’.

I do believe that FARC has many associates and benefactors in this country though and all of them are from the left wing of the democrat party. They should be charged with aiding and abetting a Foreign Terrorist Organization.

Cynthia McKinney was a big FARC supporter from what I am reading. (go figure)

Standard tactic of left-wing rebels / geurrillas when they are losing. Pretend they want a ceasefire for “talks” or some other BS while they regroup, rearm and resupply. And, make no mistake about it, Chavez IS the leader of the left-wing rebels in Columbia right now.

This is the perfect time for a right-wing / sensible government to amp up the pressure and put in the final push to wipe them out.

You really have to kill every last one when you are talking about left-wing rebels / fanatical terrorist types. That is the winning strategy. Negotiation just results in longer and bloodier conflict.

The woman implicated as an accomplice to FARC in the captured Farc computer files(earlier post), has lots of ties to democrats on Capitol Hill. Her name is Sen. Piedad Cordoba. Found her pic with Nancy Pelosi at DU of all places.

Pelosi and her fellow terrorist enabler in RED..... how appropriate.

Our Demagogues love these kinds of leftist terrorists and their supporters..... FARC never could have gone on as long as it did without plenty of Pelosi-crats in various countries on its side.

Piedad Cordoba is BFF with Hugo Chavez. Her loyalties to Colombia are most certainly suspect:

http://www.canadafreepress.com/index.php/article/2160

Of course, leftist revolutionaries always imagine they have a “higher” loyalty to the revolution, and when their governments and countrymen get in the way, well what are some broken eggs when you are busy making the great revolutionary omelet (to recall a phrase often used for the USSR). As one Soviet dissident said, “We have seen many broken eggs but no omelets.”

Ah, the Chavez statement might just have something to do with this (his nuts are being pulled into the meatgrinder so he’s ready to try to call off FARC, or at least play pretend that he will no longer support them):

On the same day Colombia said it had captured a Venezuelan national guard officer carrying 40,000 AK-47 assault rifle cartridges believed to be intended for leftist guerrillas, President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela said Saturday he would withdraw a decree overhauling intelligence policies that he had made earlier that week.

The rare reversal by Mr. Chávez came amid intensifying criticism in Venezuela from human rights groups.

The capture of the Venezuelan officer in eastern Colombia could reignite tensions between the neighboring countries over Venezuela’s support for the rebel group FARC.

Colombia’s attorney general, Mario Iguarán, said Saturday that security forces had captured the national guard officer carrying cartridges that the Colombian authorities believe were intended for the FARC.

While Mr. Chávez’s government did not immediately comment on the arrest of the Venezuelan officer, who was identified as Manuel Teobaldo Agudo Escalona, the episode suggests that pressure could mount in Washington to add Venezuela to the list of countries that are state sponsors of terrorism.

Colombian officials have recently said that Venezuela tried to provide arms and financing for the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, basing their claims on references to such dealings in archives from computers obtained in an April raid on the rebels. The United States and the European Union classify the FARC as terrorists.

Thanks for the links!

The Chicago-based Organization of Africans in the Americas, which sponsored Ms.Piedad Cordoba in 1995 has ‘suspended’ their operations. Very curious.

Here is a link to their site:

when you try to link to their directors page on capitol hill..you get this:

The OAA is in a period of dormancy

Still mining though...(wink)
