Will Smith On Obama: 'First Time' in Years it’s Good to Be an American
newsbusters.org ^ | June 23, 2008 | Geoffrey Dickens

Posted on 06/23/2008 12:30:56 PM PDT by Free ThinkerNY

On to promote his new movie "Hancock," Will Smith was pushed by "Today" co-host Matt Lauer to express his support for Barack Obama and the actor/rapper, channeled his inner Michelle Obama, as he declared it's the "first time" in five to 10 years it's been good to be an American overseas [audio available here]:

WILL SMITH: You know I just, I just came back from Moscow, Berlin, London and Paris and it's the first, I've been there quite a few times in the past five to 10 years. And it just hasn't been a good thing to be American. And this is the first time, since Barack has gotten the nomination, that it, it was a good thing.

The following is an excerpt from the interview as it occurred on the June 22, "Today" show:

MATT LAUER: Let me get you on the record on politics here, okay? It's been-

WILL SMITH: No.

LAUER: Yeah, please.

(laughter)

LAUER: It's been, you basically come out and said, "Look what I have to do to help Barack Obama win, I'll do." You know, "Call on me."

SMITH: Absolutely.

LAUER: Has he called on you and are, are you supporting Barack Obama 'cause you would've supported anybody the Democrats put forward or that you just think he's the man?

SMITH: You know I just, I just came back from Moscow, Berlin, London and Paris and it's the first, I've been there quite a few times in the past five to 10 years. And it just hasn't been a good thing to be American. And this is the first time, since Barack has gotten the nomination, that it, it was a good thing. You know the-

LAUER: Do you think people can't get behind America led by John McCain?

SMITH: You know I just, there, there are, there are certain ideas that I believe Barack stands for that are fundamental that the forefathers of this country wrote down on paper that we're all supposed to pay attention to, we're not supposed to ignore it and do what we want to do 'cause we have different ideas. And I believe just at his core the, that those ideas just they, they just come of his pores. And I'm, I'm excited to support him.

LAUER: And so the question everybody gets right now, if he calls you and wants you to be his Vice President you will?

SMITH: I will, and you know, I mean, I, I, I love this country and I'll do what I have to do. You know so, if I, if I have to run, you know, America really has an ear fetish. So I think I definitely have the ears for, Barack and I, we could do it.

Why leave the 17th in place?

I’m just the opposite — I think Will Smith blows away Samuel L. Jackson in the acting dept. Unfortunately, I think they’re cut from the same cloth when it comes to political “thinking”.

He can vote for whoever he wants, but I’m tired of these damned Hollywood celebrities. If someone overseas tells me they don’t like America, screw them. Why are so many fighting to come here then?

OHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

Nobody told me Obama has ‘stuff’ in “his pres”

I guess now I should vote for him too

I thought Will was republican. I saw another prominant black democrat Armstrong Williams gushing over Obama too.

At least if he wins we can finally tell them to STFU about ‘affirmative action’ and how the balcm man is kept down in this country.

Beside no matter who wins we will have a libral in charge.

I might just vote Obama for Pres. (no way I am voting for McLame) and Republicam across the board for Congress.

Keep opposite parties in control of those two and hopefully nothing will get accomplished (trust me its a GOOD THING when nothing gets accomplished in congress)

Will, shut up and act before I have to place you on my “do not watch” list. Dang!

My list of Hollyweird “actors” is so large at this point I can hardly watch television. If they would just realize the fact they insult half the country when they open their mouths. Just shut up and act! When the people of the USA make them millionaires, they lose touch and think that we really CARE what they think!

““Somebody’s” not gonna get m’ money for “Hancock!””

Yup. There goes my money. He has the right to his opinion, but not my money. For the sake of maintaining a broad audience, he should have told Laur “Look, I’m an Obama supporter, but I’m not going to insult other fans. So knock the political-trap questions off”.

I’m going to have to stick up for Will on this one

Don't drink the Kool-Aid.

Smith believes the Founding Fathers' ideas come "out of Obama'a pores".

I thought Will was smart but he's a nitwit.

Ditto here! I have so many on my "do not watch" list right now that it makes movie going a real challenge...first challenge, finding a movie even worth watching, then checking to see which actors, producers and directors fall on the list eliminates most.

Faulty headline.

He was repeating Europeans attitudes toward America.

Just what is he talking about? Everything Obama has said is 100% opposite of the founders intent!

The headline is misleading. He’s describing his reception in other countries.

***Later in the interview he makes it very clear that he loves this country.***

Yes, he loves it so much that he’d like to see it become another Europe. Why doesn’t he just move there if it’s so wonderful?
