Obama: ... and the Republican policies have given us the recession we are in today.
McCain: Hold on! Hold on! We're not in a recession. This just showcases my opponent's ignorance of economics. I know people are hurting, and I'm sympathetic to that. But words mean something and a recession means two consecutive quarters of negative growth. We haven't even had one such quarter. We are not in a recession.
Obama: My lord. People! Do you see?? Do you see how out of touch this man is? I know you're suffering out there America! I've seen it! I've talked to the people across this great nation! And yet this man stands here before you and he claims that there is no recession! America, we can not afford to have a president who is so blind to the people's pain!
Tom Brokaw: I think Obama just won the election. Recall Gerald Ford telling Jimmy Carter that eastern Europe was not controlled by the Soviet Union. I think we've just seen such a moment.
