The Oregon Health Plan:
The Reality of When the Government Runs Health Care
"Elect me and your health care problems will all be over." The people of Oregon fell for that line almost 20 years ago. Expecting Utopia, what they got was a reality check: long lines for a lottery to pick who's covered and suicide coverage--instead of cancer drugs. |
In 1989. Oregon became the second State, after Hawaii, to attempt complete medical coverage of it's citizens.
It has not gone as planned.
In fact, it seems to be approaching disaster. Within a few years:
In early 2003, the Oregon Health Plan (OHP) implemented cost saving strategies, reducing benefits and increasing cost-sharing for a substantial portion of its membersCost-sharing meant that people were being charged premium for the previously funded care. So we have a reduction in Medical care and services, and increased cost. But the degeneration of the plan did not end there. In March of this year, wire services carried the following:
Tens of thousands of Oregonians queued up quickly for a chance at the states latest lottery, but this one is no game.Officials began drawing names last week for a chance at some rare openings in the states healthcare plan.
Announced in February, the lottery drew 91,675 hopefuls in 30 days. The winners will receive a postcard notifying them that they can apply for the Oregon Health Plan.
"Budget limitations capped the Oregon Health Plan standard benefit package in mid-2004. Now the plan has room for a few thousand people. The lottery winners will be the first new applicants since the cap was imposed.

Hint: don’t retire in Oregon.
Bush’s fault.
I don’t think those officals will be standing in long lines.
There was a recent story telling of a situation were Oregon declined a woman’s cancer drugs but offered to pay for assisted suicide instead.
How disgusting. What false hope this whole government health care is.
I’m in favor of some sort of national major medical insurance pool that people BUY into when they don’t have alternatives. But I’m totally against our government interference with our doctors and their care for us. I also think something should be done about the trial lawyers but with the democrats in charge that’d be a cold day in hell.

Odd.
Socialized control of ________ lead to shortages of ________, rationing of _______, high system costs for _______ and poor quality of _________, if you can find it.
Who could have foreseen such a thing?
I don’t know how old you are but I certainly remember the attitude of Postal Office workers before they had competition from UPS. One guy working the window and people standing in long lines was usually what you experienced back then. It isn’t much better now. One thing is for certain...if the government gets involved there will not be an Emergency room...nothing will qualify as an emergency.
I had a rental car from San Deigo and had driven up to see some friends in Medford. I stopped at what I thought was a self serve pump and opened the cap on the car and picked up a nozzle and put it in. About that time this guy from the station came running over to me and he was in a tizzy.
He had to take the nozzle out and stop the whole transaction then start it over again. I couldn't even swipe my credit card in the pump! I had to hand it to him so he could do it. He said they passed a law to outlaw self service gas pumps to help the state jobless rates and that he could get huge fines if anyone saw me pumping my own gas.
Right there I thought “Well I never have to plan to move to Oregon!!!”
Actually, Oregon has not outlawed self service. Oregon has never allowed self service gas pumps. Assisted suicide and assisted auto service. What a combination.
How do you say Euthanaisa in HiSpanish.

I enjoy not having to pump my fuel.
No smelly hands and time to clean my windows.
During our long wet fall/winter/spring we do not have to get soaked pumping gas. I will happily stay in my car while the summer heat is here also.
Our unleaded yesterday was $4.16-$4.29 depending on where we get our fuel here in Grants Pass.
No complaints here.
and to others above:
All great info and comments...I didn’t know about the assisted gas pumping.. Interesting!
The cancer patient’s suicide-instead-of-drugs is contained in the latter part of this article.
Thanks!
Liberalism is just another name for nihilistic materialism - nothing matters, all is futility, we are no higher than animals, there is no free will, no soul, no hope, no nothing.
No wonder liberals have no sense of humor!
funny....
The theme song to what TV series?
