The jaw might belong to homo erectus, the first type of human to walk upright, who appeared in Africa 1.8 million years ago and was the precursor of both modern man, or homo sapiens, and the separate species of Neanderthal man.


Are we all descended from Homo Erectus?

Also, I thought there was a thread out here recently about Neanderthals interbreeding with Homo Sapiens, and Homo Sapiens eventually took over the human population.

I don't know. There are 23 species of humans, 22 of them are extinct.

Actually there are those that say we are Homo Erectus, the one full skeleton they have(a boy) is consistant with Homo Sapiens. Skull dimensions are slightly smaller inside but other wise quite close to homo sapiens, Of course they don’t like to admit it but there you go.
