MIAMI, US - A POISONOUS rattlesnake hidden among leafy plants in the garden section of US retail giant Walmart sprung out and bit a man who was shopping there, a company spokeswoman said on Monday.
The man was hospitalised after the 30-centimeter pygmy rattlesnake bit him in the right hand while he was perusing the plants at the store in Pembroke Pines, Florida, about 50 kilometers north of Miami.
'This is an isolated incident and we're taking precautions to make sure that it doesn't happen again,' Walmart spokeswoman Ms Ashley Hardie said.
'To ensure the well-being of our customers, we immediately closed the garden centre to enable animal control to do a thorough search of the area. The garden centre was re-opened once we were convinced it was safe to do so.'
The Miami Herald newspaper reported that the man received intravenous anti-venom treatment at Miramar Hospital and was expected to make a full recovery.
The pygmy rattlesnake's poisonous bite could be fatal for an elderly person or small child, medics said. -- AFP
Had this happen locally in a Hobby Lobby. It apparently was an Asian variety, never heard whether poisonous or not.
I work in a Walmart warehouse. Never have seen a snake nor has anyone I know of, but I still stay alert. Too many trips to Alabama to see the relatives when I was a kid I guess.
Gadzooks, I've always wondered... when the headline says "Womna shot and bullet is in her yet," I wish to know where in the hell is a woman's yet?
I once kissed a woman on the veranda.
Pshaw, Jeff! I can believe kissing her on her stoop or her porch, but her veranda? Never! That's not only perverted, it is unsanitary!
We found a little Western Diamondback in our garage a few months ago. Bad tempered little thing.
When we first moved into our house there was a copperhead den just a few hundred feet from us. In the first year we lived here, I want to say we ended up killing four or five copperheads in our yard and our neighbor killed two in his garage.
Well, if you want to, then go ahead and say it. :-)
Obviously you've never been bitten in the Autozone or the Blimpie.
How about lost income from missing work and if it is like here he will have to get a lawyer to git anything from walmart so we have lawyer fees
A lot of the awards the corporations like walmart brings on themselves.
Not so ... here in Florida it is not uncommon for a snake or other animal to lurk in the garden center of a big box store. I saw a small rattler in Lowes GC 2 or 3 years ago - when the people in line in front of you start jumping to either side it is time to start high steppin! We had a pigmy rattler loose in an office building once, a coral snake at the foot of a neighbor’s driveway ... Nope, between snakes, gators, and fire ants, one must be very aware of one’s step here in the Sunshine state!
And here I was just worried about gasoline prices jumpin’ up and biting me because the snakes in the demoncratic party have sabotaged us.
Thanks. FReepers know everything:o).
I respect your proposed logic, but there are far too, many scam artist(s) on the circuit today.
Let’s consider the theory of probability of this happening to a normal and prudent person.
Respectfully,

I WAS smitten in the Azores once.
You forgot the crab shack !
Well, I got sunburnt in my backyard!
When I was a kid - this was when SAHM was the norm - I was with a bunch of kids playing ball when the pitcher got hit by a batted ball.
The kid was bawling, and two moms came running out. The first mom explained to the other that “Johnny got hit in the coin.”
That is the ONLY time I’ve ever heard it referred to that way.
Speaking of GUM, does that department store still exist?
How about in the rotunda?
