For Some Ohioans, Even Meat Is Out Of Reach

All Things Considered, July 17, 2008 · A generation ago, the livelihood of Gloria Nunez's family was built on cars.
Her father worked at General Motors for 45 years before retiring. Her mother taught driver's education. Nunez and her six siblings grew up middle class.
Things have changed considerably for this Ohio family.
Nunez's van broke down last fall. Now, her 19-year-old daughter has no reliable transportation out of their subsidized housing complex in Fostoria, 40 miles south of Toledo, to look for a job.
Nunez and most of her siblings and their spouses are unemployed and rely on government assistance and food stamps. Some have part-time jobs, but working is made more difficult with no car or public transportation.

From the article, the mother was disabled from a car accident. Same thing happened to me, I can’t criticize. But that’s what families are for. And what happened to the daughter? She seems like she’s just fat.
On woman getting disability and another with a full time job in subsidized housing should be able to do it.

I was afraid to click “enlarge” under the picture...my computer only has so much RAM.
My husband is diabetic and I had to stop frying everything. On a rare rare occassion I will fry some fries for the kids, but only in the heart healthy oil (as heart healthy as you can get in oil). The only thing I had trouble with was cube steak (we eat the turkey cube steak) and knowing how to make it taste good without frying. I started using cream of mushroom soup, 98% fat free and baking it. It is really good over brown rice!
Years ago, the NYT (I believe) did a spread on rural poverty in America that was supposed to evoke the audience's sympathy, I guess.
The couple who was the subject of the article had named their son "Chevyvan" because that was where he'd been conceived. Their photo, taken on a Sunday morning, showed them sitting at their kitchen table that was literally covered with empty beer cans.
And it’s not like they don’t have the time to prepare the food, even the kind that actually requires cooking. I bought some collards the other day for $2. I will cook them, eat them a night or two and freeze the rest. Two dollars for about 5 or 6 meals. It just takes effort.
That sounds like a good meal to me, and I am not what you would consider poor!

When my Son was born, there was a little baby girl at the hospital that they named “Female” pronounced “Fem Molly” because thats what the hospital tagged the crib with.
Lazy lazy people
This is absolutely pathetic. They can’t get jobs and wonder WHY?????!!!!! I can’t even imagine them being able to perform most jobs at all. While I have some sympathy for the extremely obese, the reality is it’s simple MATH, people, more calories need to go out than come in!!!
Also, if they were THAT poor, they would not be THAT obese. Food costs money. They probably eat out alot is my guess.
You can make enough money picking up pop bottles to eat decent if uncle sugar is paying for housing and utilities
I don’t think they are malnourished at all. They are probably not eating nutrients that are healthy but I bet they are eating tons of meat AND carbs AND cheese/dairy too!! Guaranteed.
Its thier metabolism. It cant near handle all the burgers they are trying to shovel through it!

The accident was 17 years ago. She is 40. She has NEVER had a job.

Good points. If this is the best NPR can do, one wonders.
So many people never are accountable for their actions. I have a dear friend that, sadly, is morbidly obese and underwent gastric bypass several years ago to save her life. She lost 100 lbs. but is still about 150 lbs. overweight.
Several years ago, we went to dinner at a nice Italian place and she got a huge plate of pasta. After she ate 3/4 of the plate (which could have fed 3 people), she exclaimed, “oh I am full” and I said, “Okay, then just quit eating.” She looked at me with this mean expression and started shoveling it in and finished it off. It gave me such insight into her problem. I still don’t know why she would sabotage herself like that.

Oh. I forgot. This is a liberal NPR report. Fathers are not important here. As we all know: Fathers have been replaced by a welfare check.
