Reid Flares Over Media Coverage of Energy Proposals (Asks Reporter: Do You Speak English?)
Fox News ^ | Thursday, July 24, 2008 | Trish Turner

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's advice to reporters who don't get his energy agenda: Check your hearing.

Reid, D-Nev., may look like a mild-mannered man, but when he's backed into a corner, this former boxer comes out swinging. On Thursday, the object of his ire was the Fourth Estate as he lashed at reporters quizzing him over stalled Democratic energy proposals.

At a "pen and pad" — a more casual, off-camera chat with reporters — Reid attacked and scolded correspondents in attendance, telling them he's "really disappointed" in how they have been writing his energy plans, which include a bill to reign in speculation in the energy futures markets.

According to two Senate Democratic aides, Reid and other Democratic leaders were particularly stung by an article Thursday in The New York Times. It followed on several other reports that have highlighted Democrats' attempts to fend off defections from their ranks to GOP-sponsored amendments, measures that would permit new drilling in the Outer Continental Shelf and in the West for oil shale.

Reporters tried to pin Reid down Thursday on the amendment issue.

In the exchange, Reid told one reporter she should "watch the [Senate] floor more often. ... You might learn something."

Another reporter explained she had watched the Senate proceedings and said it was not clear he was ... offereing separate amendments, to which Reid asked the reporter if she "spoke English."

"Turn up your Miracle Ear," Reid added.

Reid spokesman Jim Manley later told the reporter his boss's comments were a show of "frustration," not desperation.

The House No. 2 Republican, Roy Blunt of Missouri, told reporters today, "Clearly we've built a fire on energy that they're feeling the heat from."

The reporter should have responded with a question in Spanish.

Harry Reid says “Coal makes us sick”. Well, these numbers are gonna make him sicker. While he fiddles with ‘oil’, coal takes off. Seems he can’t control everything!!

Arch Coal’s 2Q earnings triple on soaring prices
7/25/2008, 9:35 a.m. CDT
By JIM SUHR
The Associated Press

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Arch Coal Inc. said Friday its second-quarter profit tripled on soaring global prices and tighter coal supplies, easily beating Wall Street expectations.

The St. Louis-based company, one of the nation’s biggest coal producers, raised its earnings forecast for 2008, citing what Arch’s top executive called “our confidence in coal market fundamentals and in the company’s future growth prospects.”

Arch reported net income of $113 million, or 78 cents per share in the latest April-through-June period. That compared with $37.6 million, or 26 cents per share, during the same period last year, in which Arch’s profit dove 46 percent after it reined in production amid a softer market.

“... and abandoning valuing oil in dollars?”

Good point — needs to be repeated often. The U.S. drives huge benefits from having the world's (main) reserve currency. Most Americans probably won't know what you've got, til it's gone.

(For instance, in Canada, we learned how hard it is to pay down a national debt that's denominated in a foreign — i.e. U.S. dollar. As the loonie fell against the greenback, our debt increased proportionally.)

What is Reid's energy program?

So far all I have heard from Reid, Pelosie and the Obamameister is :

1. Higher Gasoline PRICES

2. More taxes on Gasoline

3. More Bicycles

4. More Taxes on alternative energy usage

5. Anything to spread the pain to business and citizens

Do you speak English? Fair question nowadays.

If Reid was a private businessman, that statement would likely have gotten him a human rights lawsuit.

Former boxer. I’d like a few rounds in the ring with him.

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe he's trying to rekindle his boxing career.

Seems to me that he's taken a few too many shots to the head.

which include a bill to reign in speculation ...

He should have asked her if she knows the difference between "reign" and "rein."

handel asked pickens if he was just for wind power, why not nuclear?

pickens said he’s for all energy sources that get us off foreign oil.

natural gas we should be using for transportation and electrical generation since we have a lot of it.

this part i agree with.

but praising the mayor went overboard.

Oh really what else does it consist of? Shouldn't that read "which consist only of reigning in the energy futures markets".

Ann Coulter makes the point that no rat proposal addresses the root cause of the problem (ironic isn't it?).

The root cause of the problem is that we need more energy.

Riding bicycles, taxing the evil oil companies, and establishing a Federal Department Mandating Proper Hitch-Hiking Tecniques will do nothing to address the problem that we need more energy.

Try drilling for more oil and building refineries and nuclear power plants.

That will get the job done.

*snort* This won’t endear Dingy Harry to the MSM, will it? I’m hoping they’ll start looking more closely at the Democrat proposals and report them for exactly what they are; the means to stifle the economy to achieve their socialist and environmentalist goals. Oh, and more importantly right now, to try to make the Republicans look bad so they can take back the White House in November and have an uncontested chance to implement that socialist agenda.

Sen Reid must be a different person in his job at the Senate, he seems ineptly trying to cover up for some secret Gov’t business.

In a Dim’s case, “reign” is probably the proper word.
