Waiting for the first Howard Stern crank caller to call in, like Captain Janks during the OJ chase.

Ha Ha! The person I was working with hadn’t been through one either! She didn’t like it much. I figure if you feel it but can still walk around, it’s between 4.0 and about 6.3.

I just talked to a friend in Pomona. All is fine; nothing even fell off her shelves.

It was a moderately hard jolt here at first followed by a sharp jolt and some hard shaking which lasted too long. I'm about 50 miles East of the epicenter. The aftershocks have been mild rolling shakes.

Yeah, I know. I learned logarithms when we still had to use slide rules to calculate them.

Yes, I’m familiar with that quote and like it a lot. But I was also trying to point out that ‘we the people’ don’t pay enough attention to the people we elect (or allow others to elect). The Secular Puritans’ power is nothing compared to the power of an informed and determined electorate.

It's a lot closer than that. Maybe between 5 and 10 miles. Should be fine though. (It is 5 miles from Yorba Linda, and the university is less than 5 miles from there.)

Richter magnitude scale
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Richter magnitude scale, or more correctly local magnitude ML scale, assigns a single number to quantify the amount of seismic energy released by an earthquake. It is a base-10 logarithmic scale obtained by calculating the logarithm of the combined horizontal amplitude of the largest displacement from zero on a Wood–Anderson torsion seismometer output. So, for example, an earthquake that measures 5.0 on the Richter scale has a shaking amplitude 10 times larger than one that measures 4.0. The effective limit of measurement for local magnitude is about ML = 6.8.

The energy release of an earthquake, which equates to its destructive power, scales with the 3⁄2 power [exponent = 3/2] of the shaking amplitude. Thus, a difference in magnitude of 1.0 is equivalent to a factor of 31.6 ((101.0)^(3 / 2)) in the energy released; a difference of magnitude of 2.0 is equivalent to a factor of 1000 ((102.0)^(3 / 2) ) in the energy released. Reporting from Yorba Linda, about 5 miles west of the epicenter, it was one Hell of a shake! Some bricks on our house’s external facade peeled off and lamps and vases and other things were knocked off their shelves. I’ve never been this close to an earthquake’s epicenter and it the most violent shaking I’ve ever experienced in a Southern California earthquake.

ABC reported some minor damage at Ontario (?) all airports say they're operating normally.
No injuries reported.

(No mention of Long Beach [Boeing] but I'd hate to be on one of the assembly structures even during a 5.8 - having once hung on through a 5.? standing on a step ladder, in a garage, under a shower of 60 year old roof gunk.)

It was the Northridge quake that first brought the problem of dust to my mind. It raised dust clouds off the mountains in the area, that wafted over populated areas and created breathing and possible infection problems. I’d never heard of that before.
