ABC: McCain “now seriously considering” Lieberman for VP
Hot Air ^ | 7/30/08 | Allahpundit

He’s going to transform the party — by turning us into hawkish Democrats? Nuance.

There’s a bigger point — and this initial volley, they say, lays the groundwork for it. They will be sharpening McCain’s message that he, not Obama, is the true change agent, a man who’s repeatedly taken unpopular stands, made the hard calls and forged bipartisan alliances.

Part of the calculus now is how his VP choice will further sharpen that message. There is significant support among top McCain advisers that he make a “transformative” pick who would change the Republican Party — someone who would appeal to moderate Republicans and Democrats…

A person who fills that bill, these advisers say, is Joe Lieberman.

Lieberman, an Independent Democrat, flatly denied his interest to ABC’s Ron Claiborne earlier this month, but McCain is now seriously considering him as that “transformative” pick, sources tell ABC News…

What’s more, some McCain advisers believe Lieberman would dramatically enhance the point they are now trying to make about Obama in this “celebrity” ad campaign.

McCain and Lieberman are anti-celebrities, the argument goes. They have, as one top adviser said, felt the heat after taking unpopular positions because they were willing to do “what’s right for the country” — whatever it meant for their own popularity.

Good news for that unpredictable five percent in the middle he needs to win, not so good for, er, everyone else in America. Are evangelicals going to vote for a guy who scored 100% on NARAL’s annual report card? Are Reagan conservatives jittery about McCain’s maverickiness going to feel reassured knowing Al Gore’s choice for VP is waiting in the wings? Is the left going to reach hitherto unscaled heights of apoplexy at the thought of the one pol they hate more than George Bush somehow ending up on the Republican ticket? (No, no, and yes, respectively, if you’re scoring at home.) Think of it in practical terms. Assume the worst happens and through some misfortune Vice President Lieberman becomes President Lieberman. Either the Democrats’ animus towards him results in hopeless gridlock in Congress or the breach is healed and we’ve got a lefty executive working with a lefty legislature towards common goals — Iraq excepted, of course. I like Liebs; I don’t like the idea. But the signs are there if you’re willing to look…

Exit question: Maybe the left, true to its proud tradition of honoring dissent, will forgive Joementum his apostasy? Hmmm.

The MSM is trying to push McCain farther right because he is killing Obama in the middle. By floating this completely bogus Leiberman story they wish to rile up the far right into putting pressure on McCain to demonstrate his “rightness” which would benefit Obama with the swing voters.

This is a bigger example of mainstream media manipulation then the Iraq photo op.

What’s amazing is how many conservatives will buy into it hook line and sinker and deliver the results the MSM wants.

Quit being tools you ignorant sluts.

Valid point, yet I look back on opposition given by the Republican party on any appointment made by the Democrats.
Give me an example and I’ll listen.

If Juan picks Joe, you do realize that gives many conservatives the last excuse they need to not vote for the man? I believe that you are smart enough to know that.

I sincerely hope that Juan is as intelligent as you.

What also hasn’t been broached is the Presidents ability to appoint per the Constitution. There is no way the Senate can keep it perpetual until they get who they want in the office of appointing. That’s why SCOTUS is so important.

WOW. I can almost remember when IT MEAN’T SOMETHING TO BE A CONSERVATIVE!

Most important thing is to win the war on terror. Then we can worry about other issues.

We disagree with Mr. Lieberman on almost every social and economic issue. But, Joe is RIGHT on the MOST IMPORTANT issue of our time! He has been a strong ally in the War on Terror. He has stood with the President against terrorism and against those who sponsor it. He clearly understands the grave nature of that threat to our civilization. He knows Islamic fascists must be defeated or those social and economic debates won't matter! Joe Lieberman is one of the few democrats who has stood with us in this fight. Joe Lieberman has never attempted to undermine our troops or our Commander in Chief!

>> Would be great if McCain hits a homerun by choosing someone like John Thune or Mike Pence. <<

I don't think FORMER UN Ambassador John Bolton will think it's "great" that the "true conservative" who stabbed him in the back and obstructed his appointment is being promoted.

Re: “Yes, he’s a social liberal, yet he’s on our side on the important issue of national defense. I like him, and I would take him as VP any day over a Obama White House. Whatever it takes to beat Obama is fine by me.”

I totally agree with you. Whatever/whoever it takes is right! I like Lieberman as well — and I think he sees through Obama’s phony veneer better than many. That said, the McCain people obviously need to figure out who best can chip away at Obambi’s voters to bring about a win for McCain. Let’s just win it! Get that short list and find the best possible candidate to get our voters to the polls for McCain.

since you guys are unwilling to fight the rinos or kick them out I would rather Obama wins. that’s the only way to give some of you people a spine, yet all you want to do is insure mccain wins.

Re: “Lieberman is no spring chicken, either, so there’s not much danger of him being president for long if Senator McCain passes away (God forbid)in office.”

OK, so if McCain and Lieberman both kick the bucket, who’s next? Speaker of the House?! Who’s on the short list for that post should McCain win the election? Thoughts?

Pelosi will still be Speaker.

I guarantee you that Lieberman is not being considered as a running mate.

Not if there are more than two choices on my ballot of slates of electors, and each of the slates of electors are for a Presidential candidate qualified on enough state ballots to have a theoretical Electoral College win.

If I go in there and I see A and B only, my two choices are to vote for either A or B, or not vote at all.

If my choices are A or B or C (or A or B or C or D or E or whatever), then my choices are among those or not voting. This point cannot be argued.

Perhaps you are in a state with only Obama and McCain on your ballot, so respectfully speaking, your mileage may very.

Outside of McCain or Obama, is there a Conservative party ballot qualified in your state? Please share.

It keeps getting better. Picking Socialist Joe would be the ultimate poke in the eye at FR. But, alas, there will still be those here that will continue their "lesser of two evils" rants.

Again, list me a "None fo the Above"
