Posted on 07/31/2008 10:36:28 AM PDT by patriciamary

Please Pray for my husband Dom.He is 50 and had a stroke on Sunday.I have been a freeper for awhile and find enjoyment and great information from my fellow freepers. My husband worked all his life, seven days a week, but we can not afford health insurance and a mortgage.I am so worried about my husband ,he has no vision or hearing in his left side and cannot walk.He also has vertigo, all from the stroke.I was told by the hospital they can take my house and all we saved if I don't make payment.I have been hearing this since Sunday.I have young children and I'm a mess .Please pray for my husband he really needs it.I am sorry if I posted wrong .I am not thinking clearly.Getting him well is what's important. Thank you

Prayers up! Don’t see how they can threaten when you haven’t even been sent a bill that you have so much time to pay. Keep your chin up and don’t take any crap from the hospital management. Contact a local attorney, explain what happened, and let him talk to hospital management and bet they back down.

Prayers on the way for your husband's recovery, for you and your family.

One other important thing: The hospital social worker will provide you with paperwork (some even help you fill it out) to apply for government medical assistance as well as hospital's own financial assistance. A family friend went through similar situation when her toddler daughter had Leukemia. They still have their house and their daughter, thanks to God and the dedicated and skilled doctors.

Sorry about your situation.

You need a specialist in this area, a case manager to assist you in navigating the health care system and financial assistance prgms available in your state. I could help you in Texas, but unfortunately, not in any other state. If a hired gun is beyond your means, contact a social worker at once. Just lay everything out there, and it would be best to find someone not associated with the hospital. The advice of an attorney would also be very important.

There must be a patient affairs representative at the hospital- and a social worker- please get the hospital to direct you and talk to them- they can help give you good advice about working out the bills. Hospitals do not take your house and savings- whoever told you that (or made you think that) needs to be reported and counseled.

If your family resources are so very slim you cannot miss one paycheck- get some advice NOW from your pastor/priest who can help you find a community agency with resources to help or at least to advise you realistically.

Your husband is a young man- hopefully this will help him in a speedy recovery

God Bless.

As this Freeper Pumblechook stated: it is impossible for them to even think of doing this unless you are months and months behind in paying them. And even then, they cannot put a lien on your house without a lot of written notices and lots of proof that they have attempted to collect on this debt. You have time to get help and work something out. You should do as others here have suggested, and if a lawyer cannot be found who will help you at no or minimal cost, go to your local Congressman's office and social services offices. Do that anyway, come to think of it. They will give you some advice. There are laws that hospitals must adhere to about treating people and not harassing them immediately for payment. Yes, they can certainly go after their money, but not threaten you. You need someone to help you work this out and think clearly.

In the meantime, prayers for your husband that he will recover. I am sure this is not helping him to have these worries now.

Things may appear hopeless at the moment, but there are options. Have faith, and go out and fight for your family.

God will show you a way. I’m sure of it.

Prayers PM.

I just turned 50 last week.

Pls seek out help from your family, friends and church so that you are not completely overwhelmed.

Is your husband a veteran by chance?

Prayers for you, your husband and young family. Dealing with the stroke and your husband’s recovery should not be worsened by threats from the hospital. Worst case scenario (as I understand it) hospitals will accept a payment plan that you can afford, however small the payment and however long it takes.

As un-conservative as it may be, I would talk to someone in your local social services office about his eligibility for medicaid and/or other services. Don’t let political philosophy or embarassment get in your way. The financial stress is not good for either of you. Your husband, as you say, has worked and likely paid into the system all his life ... surely he is entitled under these circumstances to some benefits that he’s been helping to support his entire adult life.

The important thing to focus on now is his recovery and your maintaining your own health. God Bless you.

Prayers for Dom and you.

Patriciamary, nearly EVERY hospital in the U.S. will set up a payment plan for you. I’ve never heard of a hospital threatening to take someone’s home. You need to consult an attorney.

Praying for your husband’s recovery and that the Lord will point you towards an honest attorney who will protect you from the hospital.

First, of course you have my prayers. Second, go to the billing dept. of the hospital. Ask them if they have an “indigent” fund. Our local major hospital has one, it helps people with no insurance. Third, if that fails, tell them “Welcome to my $10.00 a month club!” Promise to pay them whatever you can afford, per month, until the bill is paid. They CANNOT take your house if you make an effort to pay.

And 4th (this is just the devil in me!)Tell the next person who hassles you about money that you are going to the president of the hospital with your complaints. Then flip him/her off behind his/her back...it’ll make you feel better!

Move everything you own...money, house, children, pets... everything...into an offshore account. Nobody will be able to touch it.

Do it NOW.
