Pelosi's Moratorium Puts Planet At Risk ( Charles Krauthammer )
realclearpolitics.com ^ | August 01, 2008 | Charles Krauthammer

WASHINGTON -- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi opposes lifting the moratorium on drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and on the Outer Continental Shelf. She won't even allow it to come to a vote. With $4 gas having massively shifted public opinion in favor of domestic production, she wants to protect her Democratic members from having to cast an anti-drilling election-year vote. Moreover, given the public mood, she might even lose. This cannot be permitted. Why? Because as she explained to Politico: "I'm trying to save the planet; I'm trying to save the planet."

A lovely sentiment. But has Pelosi actually thought through the moratorium's actual effects on the planet?

Consider: 25 years ago, nearly 60 percent of U.S. petroleum was produced domestically. Today it's 25 percent. From its peak in 1970, U.S. production has declined a staggering 47 percent. The world consumes 86 million barrels a day; the United States, roughly 20 million. We need the stuff to run our cars and planes and economy. Where does it come from?

Places like Nigeria where chronic corruption, environmental neglect and resulting unrest and instability lead to pipeline explosions, oil spills and illegal siphoning by the poverty-stricken population -- which leads to more spills and explosions. Just this week, two Royal Dutch Shell pipelines had to be shut down because bombings by local militants were causing leaks into the ground.

I actually AGREE with Pelosi...
Defeating Obama CAN save the planet!

And I’m honestly thinking that is the end goal. If Obama wins, she loses her position as most powerful Democrat in the Nation, and I’m not sure her monsterous ego can take that.

The good MD is brilliant as usual. He really thew it in her face that Pelosi’s position is worse for the planet than drilling here.

They seem blissfully unaware that the argument for their drill-there-not-here policy collapses on its own environmental terms.

Pelosi, Reid and the rest of the commie Democrats know what they are doing. It's about bringing America to her knees. It's about bringing about a world government run by a socialist/commie elite.

IT'S ABOUT POWER. The people be damned. Democrats for the little guy what an unbelievable sham.

Consider spiffy new inflated tires cans save 3% on gas mileage, that means it would knock our 75% dependence down to 72%. Maybe they can add another percent in the oil savings when they ban plastic bags, which are made from petroleum, they can ban trans fat, which is not made from petroleum, but it will save us on the gas it took to get us to the place that sold us the fries. Then they can increase illegal immigrant farm laborers, so we dont have to modernize our gasoline powered Ag equipment, they will pick it for us all by hand, that will save another percent, then we will all buy carbon offsets for the rest, and thus break even on our oil imports on paper,

While in the meantime we wait 10 years for the windmills ( we all get those beanies with little propellers on our heads) and solar cells, we all must own a magnifying glass, and a little paper, it burns really well, we include all this in infrastructure to be built and we buy an all electric car, that runs on batteries to be manufactured outside of the country where it won’t be illegal to pollute the battery chemicals.....

and that ladies and gentleman is the Obamma Pelosi solution!

Pelosi is a walking time bomb. 9% approval rating. Lowest I can remember.

""I'm trying to save the planet; I'm trying to save the planet.""

What a meglomaniac psychopath; and a liar to boot. She's quadrupled her use of jet fuel this month alone trying to promote her egocentric self glorifying book, at taxpayers expense I might add.

she should be tossed out of office just for the theft of this taxpayers money, putting all that jet fuel, hotel, and 40 suv long, queen of England-like motorcade and security that scoot her from day time talk show to day time talk show.

She's nothing but a natural resource hog, polluting the skies with jet exhaust and polluting the airwaves with that excrement she calls a book.

No matter how hard these idiots daydream, windmills and solar panels will NEVER come close to supplying even 1/10 of the electricity we need, and it will never supply the steady streams of high loads we need at all. The best it can ever do is supplement other sources that are capable of producing steady supplies of high amperage/voltage power. As far as battery cars go, even the batteries they make for these cars are still very inefficient and will only last so long. They still break down because of the high power input/output loads demanded of them, and electric motor brushes and commutators and coils bushing have a very short lifespan as well, not to mention the increased demand for copper (thus copper mining) to make the wire needed to fill the increased demand for them.

Until the cost of high voltage, high output/input duty cycle capacitors become available, electric cars just aren't very efficient or practical, and have an environmental cost of manufacture 3or 4 times that of the largest Humvie.

The entire "green" electric dream of these enviro wacko's is just not possible with the current line up of electric cars, windmills and solar panels.

The only practical and doable technology we currently posses that can meet our energy needs as far as electricity goes is nuclear. So the government had better smarten up and clear the way for rapid nuclear reactor building if we are to avoid an energy crisis.

It's the lowest you can remember because that's the lowest it's ever been.

But maybe they can break their own new record!

What is the cost of the Democrat "No Domestic Energy Policy?"

All of that puts the U.S. in a position that war for oil or
complete economic collapse will be our only choices.
You can't frustrate every source of domestic energy
without consequences. Our enemies will blackmail us
to the extent that we are vulnerable to blackmail.

The Democrats are leading us into a real war for oil.
A war we won't have the energy to fight.

They seem it but they're not. I think liberals are much more malevolent than that.

In other words, the Left are hypocrites on the environment. They're happy to rape the rest of the planet so America stays pristine. Some environmental policy!

At the end of the day, there has been a 2 or 3% reduction in the US consumption of gasoline this Summer over last Summer. That is the net effect of the rising prices on consumption. This is the environmental pay-off that the Democrats are after.

So, the Democrats are willing to trash our economy, destroy our industries, finance our enemies, mortgage our futures at put us at the mercy of every tin-pot dictator with oil, all to reduce US consumption by 2 - 3%.

Are we clear on that?

After all, Barack Obama says he is not concerned that gasoline is $4/gal. He is only concerned that the price has risen so quickly...
