The war on scientists in America
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 8/5/8 | Debra J. Saunders

Posted on 08/05/2008 7:48:28 AM PDT by SmithL

Imagine if a group of rabid creationists started fire-bombing the homes of University of California professors to prevent them from teaching evolution. Area politicians would be holding competing press conferences to assure the public that they would take on the violent zealots, who have declared war, not only on good academics and their families, but on science itself.

No need to imagine. Across California, a different group of zealots has done just that. True believers have distributed personal information on scientists and their families. They've placed firebombs in medical researchers' homes and cars. They've donned hoods on their heads and marched to the homes of professors, then banged on their doors. They've told children that their parents are evil murderers and chalked anonymous charges on sidewalks for the neighbors to see.

The difference is these zealots aren't fighting for religious fundamentalism. Extremist animal rights groups have organized anonymously to intimidate and terrorize medical researchers until they abandon their studies out of fear for their children's safety and their own peace of mind.

They perfected the art of intimidation in the United Kingdom. First, extremists vandalized research labs. Then, they targeted companies that did business with researchers. In 2004, activists finally went too far when they dug up the remains of the mother-in-law of a guinea-pig breeder.

Now animal rights extremists are targeting University of California researchers. First, they placed bombs that did not go off. When that didn't shut down labs, they ratcheted up the violence. Wanted posters warned UC Santa Cruz researchers: "Animal abusers everywhere beware; we know where you live; we know where you work; we will never back down until you end your abuse."

Early Saturday morning, a firebomb destroyed a car belonging to a UCSC scientist. Shortly afterward, a firebomb erupted in the nearby townhouse...

"Imagine if a group of rabid creationists started fire-bombing the homes of University of California professors "

Great start to a story that has nothing to do with creationists.

Leftist have always been the ones of violence and hatred.

Of course the chief of police for Los Angeles says “we cannot arrest our way out of this” for just about everything.

Indeed, the creationists would probably pray for those to whom they are opposed, vs. firebombing them.

Animal rights activists love animals and hate people.

Although I understand the point the author is making, you are correct. There had to have been a better way to start this article.

They should just let it all hang out “creationists”, “pro-lifers”, “don’t support homosexuality”, “don’t support transvestites”... might just as well cover all the bases if they’re going to demonize the religious.

Well, everyone knows that creationists are so deranged and irrational that they're capable of absolutely anything. They're not just stupid, ignorant, and psychologically screwy: they maliciously refuse to accept Science and Scientists for what they really are, out of some deeply pernicious motive that we've not yet fully analyzed ...

Given that this article was published in the San Francisco Chronicle I liked that the author came up with a hypothetical that would offend the morals of the average reader of said publication and then essentially challenging them to be consistent in the application of their morality.

“Imagine” That’s when I stopped reading. This usually means that the rest of the story is going to be filled with no facts and emotional appeal.

[ Imagine if a group of rabid creationists started fire-bombing the homes of University of California professors to prevent them from teaching evolution. ]

THEN if that were so the media would have spun the story to be propaganda.. You know like they do with most stories.. Almost all profs. at UoC are fire breathing Marxists..

"The idea of awarding rights to animals has the support of legal scholars such as Alan Dershowitz and Laurence Tribe of Harvard Law School.[4][2] Steven Wise, also of Harvard Law School, argues that the first serious judicial challenges to what he calls the "legal thinghood" of animals may only be a few years away.[5] Animal law courses are now taught in 97 out of 180 law schools in the United States,[6] and animal rights is routinely taught in universities as part of applied ethics or philosophy courses. Robert Garner of the University of Leicester calls it the "new morality."[7]

Imagine if a group of rabid creationists environmental Darwinists started fire-bombing the homes of University of California professors to prevent them from teaching evolution intelligent design and free-market economies.

Isn't that more to the point of what actually happened? The (Chronicle) liberals are brain damaged.

but it does illustrate that godless liberals have a much larger problem on their hands threatening science, from global warming loons to domestic terrorists.

Also, the imagined threats from ‘individual creationists’ and ‘radical Christians’ can be used to justify counter attacks, in the legal and mob action sense against innocent groups.

I don’t think so. The Unabomber was a lone actor. These eco-terrorists are more like a cult. They are as secretive as the Unabomber, but their numbers make them far more dangerous.
