TIMESONLINE ^ | August 11, 2008 | Mark Franchetti

The fighting in Georgia has answered the question that world leaders have been asking since Vladimir Putin stepped down as President this year: who runs Russia?

The answer, of course, is Mr Putin. It came not from Moscow, but from Beijing – 4,500 miles away – where the Russian Prime Minister was watching the Olympics when Georgia mounted its assault on South Ossetia.

Attending the opening ceremony of the Games, Mr Putin strongly condemned the military attack and vowed retaliation. Only several hours later did President Medvedev, Mr Putin’s handpicked successor, take to the airwaves.

Nope, this is much bigger than Kosovo.

What it’s about is free nations operating within their sovereignty as such on the borders of Russia.

Russia has been undermining Georgia for a long time and even banned imports of Georgian wine. Not that Russians were happy about that.

Next Russia will rattle its sabers against its other neighbors with Ukraine being target no. 1.

Kosovo is not in the same league. It didn’t help but that’s secondary.

“Putin leads from front”

Wish that were really true — maybe he’d step on a land mine.

With everything that is happening on the surface, I can only imagine the cat and mouse games that is going on underneath the water as I type this..

Any submariners on this forum that could weigh in on THAT?

"This is basically about Kosovo."

What, we sent tanks and artillery into Kosovo and attacked Serbian units?

Next you'll probably be saying it's about America's treatment of native Americans and that American inner-cities are proof of the failure of Capitalism.

“Pootie knows that if Obama becomes President, the era of strong American Presidents is over.”

I think he thinks the era of a strong America is over.

According to Drudge, this war is Putin led.

I hate we can’t post AP articles (stupid associated press, greedy bastards) because I have no where to discuss this most disturbing turn of events with you guys.

If it is truly Putin led, it is very good timing. Instigate a U.S. response that escalates the situation and a war weary America puts Obama in charge. Putin gets the free ride from there on out to do so as he pleases.

Kosovo may be a factor, but its deeper than that - its about Ukraine, and the Baltic States as well as control of oil flow from Azerbaijan.

The era of strong Presidents ended with Ronald Reagan.

Bush I, Clinton, and Bush II are minor leaguers.

Anything that brings foreign affairs to the front will hurt obama. Especially a newly asertive Russia.

This gushing little piece makes me wonder who Franchetti is rooting for...or maybe it doesn’t. Putin is not leading from the front, he’s hobnobbing with athletes in China.

Guess I should have spelled it out then, former submariners (I wasn’t expecting active duty to post)
