The UN has estimated that 20,000 civilians have been forced to flee their homes since fighting began in Georgia. The BBC's Gavin Hewitt reports from the frontline near the town of Gori, where Russian planes have been in action. As he reported on the fate of civilians in Georgia, his team came under attack from Russian fire.

So we flattened Belgrade just like the Russians flattened Grozny ? I have posted images above of what the Russians did to Grozny. Will the world once again have to look at those images taken from Gori ?
What could happen is that the GUAM organization comes to the defense of Georgia. That will bring Ukraine, Moldavia and Azerbaijan into the fight. If Russia attacks Azerbaijan, that will bring Turkey into the fight. If Russia attacks Turkey that will bring NATO and the US into the fight. So my guess is the Russians were probably hoping to secure the pipeline in Georgia and drive their armor into Iran via Armenia. That would keep Azerbaijan, Turkey, NATO and the US out of the picture. The key here may not be NATO. The key may be GUAM and the US will have no way to prevent that escalation. The Russians must be counting on the GUAM organization to fall apart. Or at least to contain the conflict to Georgia and the Ukraine only. They could however have something cooked up for internal Turkey. The Russians are good Chess players and while Chess does have complex depth, it is limited somewhat in breadth.
