US Vice President Dick Cheney has threatened Russia after the country was forced to reply Georgia's attack on South Ossetia's region.
In a phone conversation with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili on Sunday, Cheney said Russia's military actions in Georgia 'must not go unanswered'.
Continuation of Russian attack 'would have serious consequences for its relations with the United States, as well as the broader international community,' Cheney's press secretary, Lee Ann McBride, quoted him as telling Saakashvili.
"The vice president expressed the United States' solidarity with the Georgian people and their democratically elected government in the face of this threat to Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity," McBride said.
Earlier, Chairman of Russia's State Duma Security Committee Vladimir Vasilyev announced that US helped Georgia start military operation in South Ossetia.
"The further the situation unfolds, the more the world will understand that Georgia would never be able to do all this without America," said Vasilyev.
Georgian military forces launched a large-scale military offensive against South Ossetia on Thursday evening hours before the start of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Russia, in response, moved its forces to the region.
The conflict has left at least 2000 people dead.
I don’t know what to think. One part of me thinks Bush has signed off on the Russian plan and Putin has signed off on the American plan (Iran). The other part fears Russia is ready to attempt a global checkmate of some kind, and we had no idea this was coming.
Russia under Putin has become the a**hole of nations. We all have one where we work. You know, the guy that goes out of his way to screw everybody else to the point that you dont even want to say hi to him.
Well, thats Russia today.
Hey Russia, when you act like a pr!ck and go out of your way to mess with other people, youre an a**hole.
Ruck Fussia!
A lot of what the media is saying about this just doesn’t pass the smell test. Looks like Russia wants control of the oils pipeline.
The bottom line will be if we see Carrier movement or change in defense posture.
The Cold War, again.
Amazing. Just Amazing.
we don’t have a dog in this fight
Big time
Fine, we don’t have a dog in this fight. True. But Russia has still been acting like the a**hole of nations.
I will admit this one has me puzzled. This will not be a popular post but are we sure Russia is not acting correctly.
South Ossetia has voted to succeed and rejoin North Ossetia. Russia approved Unification with North Ossetia. Georgia did not and banned South Ossetia politcal Party.
Georgia Attacked South Ossetia just as the olympics were starting.
Russia responeded and now Georgia want a Cease fire.
What have I missed why are we blaming Russia from defending South Ossetia.
Man, I’m so glad people like Cheney are in power. Can you imagine if F’n Kerry had won in 2004 and the Silk Pony would be making some statement to Russia?
Yes, unfortunately, we do. IF we turn our back on our allies, it will only encourage Russia to move against the other countries who broke away after the Soviet Union broke up. The unfortunate part is that we will have to go to war with Russia to stop them. THAT will end up in WW3, and could very easily go nuclear. Bush and Cheney had better proceed very carefully, because it could get out of hand very quickly.
Interesting speculation.
Russia’s main goal worldwide is to have control of the world’s oil supplies. This is the main and ONLY true objective of what they are doing right now. This is why they are becoming fast friends with, Iran and the likes of Chavez. The loony left in this country that are holding us back from drilling are going to kill our economy, this country and it’s people!!!!!! Russia is looking, once again, for world domination through oil, period!!
Whoever controls the worlds oil, controls the world. The left does not get that and all the “Donner Party” Republicans who won’t vote for McCain better wake up. The stakes are way too high. Now is not the time in history to “teach” the party a lesson. We need to DRILL HERE and DRILL NOW, and that means we have to bite the bullet and vote for McCain.
READ EPICENTER BY JOEL ROSENBERG!!! You will be enlightened on what Russia is up to!!!!
We had that attitude in the 30’s and look what happened..
The first wave of Georgian soldiers (look at the FR thread with pics) do not all look Georgian. Bush is still in China, and not saying much. Cheney is talking big, but we can't do much, but from the looks of it we knew this was coming.
You are going to give a rat’s rearend when they control all of the world’s oil supply. You can kiss this country and other freedom loving counties goodbye if we let that happen.
