US Vice President Dick Cheney has threatened Russia after the country was forced to reply Georgia's attack on South Ossetia's region.
In a phone conversation with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili on Sunday, Cheney said Russia's military actions in Georgia 'must not go unanswered'.
Continuation of Russian attack 'would have serious consequences for its relations with the United States, as well as the broader international community,' Cheney's press secretary, Lee Ann McBride, quoted him as telling Saakashvili.
"The vice president expressed the United States' solidarity with the Georgian people and their democratically elected government in the face of this threat to Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity," McBride said.
Earlier, Chairman of Russia's State Duma Security Committee Vladimir Vasilyev announced that US helped Georgia start military operation in South Ossetia.
"The further the situation unfolds, the more the world will understand that Georgia would never be able to do all this without America," said Vasilyev.
Georgian military forces launched a large-scale military offensive against South Ossetia on Thursday evening hours before the start of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Russia, in response, moved its forces to the region.
The conflict has left at least 2000 people dead.

Allow me to introduce: Dmitri Medvedev: Russia's new 'Puppet President'
--snip:
Dmitri Medvedev is the youngest and the third President of Russia. Western media is seeing him as 'Puppet President', as it will be difficult for him to come out of the shadow of the outgoing President Vladimir Putin who will sworn as new PM..

Medvedev has been quoted as saying some very imflammatory things; something which one would think a President SHOULDN'T say in such a time as this.
Prime Minister in Russia is NOT the same as PRIME Minister in say, England.
Somehow... I smell Chavez'/Iran sulfur emanations all the way from So. Ossetia.
Is someone trying to drive Conoco-Phillips from Russia? Take over their investments, too?
Agreed... and who’s idea was it to jump the Kosovo shark?
You are exactly right.
2 US aircraft carriers headed for Gulf'
A bit far away I know, but it does bring the battlegroups in the region up to four.
“Dangerous if followed”.
Please explain?
Yes I know North Ossetia is still part of Russia but that is their choice not ours.
What is your reference on South Ossetia attacking Georgia.
Funny you should mention Canada read my next post. It all depends how far these “Peace keeper” continue their attack into Georgia proper.
Deja vu all over again..Yogi berra
thanks for the resonable and articulate post.
Yes, that's right and I totally agree. It's going to be pretty rough if we decide to go for it, but if we don't, Russia is going to reclaim all of the break away countries. I wouldn't be surprised if they try to reclaim Alaska either. If they perceive us as weak, they will go for it. Like an Obama administration would be.
Clinton downsized our military pretty bad, and we've had to double the length of tour duties to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan. I don't know if we're got enough troops to engage in a war with Russia. Of course, if it goes nuclear, boots on the ground won't matter.
We changed the law.
HIV/AIDS foreigners are now welcome in the USA!!
Makes ya feel good, doesn’t it?
The "we don't have a dog in this fight" attitude. In the 30's, the US just sort of laid low and let Hitler come into power, and even build a huge military machine. We could see it coming, but decided it wasn't our business...
We see how that turned out.
That is one of the reasons why I’m voting for McCain.. Granted he is not a true conservative (but who is), but he is Commander in Chief material.
The problem of a people moving into another area and refusing to then become part of the culture, is one that is too often ignored. I would presume that if people are gulled into accepting these people, they are being optimistic. Remember the Alamo, remember the Goliad indeed.
I know that a Greek military man had carried out a census in 1871 of Kosovo. The Kosovo Serbs had a slight edge over Albanians and others. At the turn of the last century, the Kosovo Serbs were then in a sizable minority. Gradually through brutal acts, large numbers of Serbs were chased out after WW2. Now they are only 5% to 7% of the population. It was the Serbs who were "ethnically cleansed", not, as we were told by Nato, the Serbs who did that.
Curiously enough, little is said of Adolf Hitler. For it was his excuse to go into Czechoslovakia. He claimed that the Sudaten Germans were being pushed around by the Czechs. He pulled the same thing in Poland. He made things ten time worse. He lost the whole lot.
The problem of populations that refuse to integrate is upon us.
So if Texas decided to join Mexico and The US disagreed and Mexic attacked Houston, you’d be OK with that?

Follow the money. Follow the pipeline. Follow the most recent rise in a barrel of gas given this recent seizure and murder of 2000 citizens.
No Blood for Oil, Miz Pelosi? Yank the other one; it's got bells.
In California, the Democrat party only obeys the rules and laws IT agrees with.
If we were relying on the CIA, then it's certain we had no idea this was coming.
Sure we do: The Free dog. The Ally. The non-hegemon.
Whether we choose to engage militarily is another question. But are you seriously suggesting moral and strategic equivalence between Georgia and Russia from the U.S. perspective?
