Huggies Wow; I'm a Gymnast Now; Underage Chinese Olympic Gymnasts Rant, Bella Caroli is Right
Associated Content ^ | August 12, 2008 | Michael Luchies

Huggies wow; I'm a gymnast now! I am watching the Olympics right now and couldn't be more upset watching a sporting event. I am not mad that the country I am routing for (United States) is falling apart, not mad because the only event they are showing is gymnastics, but furious because several of the gymnasts are clearly under the 16 year old age requirement. Bella Caroli himself made a comment during the broadcast that the Chinese gymnasts were under 16 but since they had "legitimate" passports, they are allowed to compete. Aren't the Olympics supposed to be the purist form of sports? Will cheating in sports ever end?

Obviously I have absolutely no evidence or proof that any of the gymnasts in the olympics are under the age of 16. But if you are fortunate to have a set of eyes and common sense you can clearly see that the women...sorry little girls that are putting on an amazing show are barely toilet trained. Ok that may be a little harsh but look at them! Many of the Chinese girls do not come up to the shoulders of any other countries athletes. I think I saw someone on the balance beam who didn't have teeth yet. Are they midgets? Is there a national problem in China with women who have stunted growth?

These girls are unbelievable, but still little girls who have no life outside of gymnastics. They are sent by their parents as young as 3 off to train for the Olympics. Sometimes they are even able to see their parents once every other year.

> That is precisely the line I referred to. It apears to be a reference to Americans and Europeans believing East Asian body shapes and appearances as being illegitimate.

I defer to your judgment on attitudes toward Asians as you are better equipped than I to have a view on that.

However, the line I cited speaks about PATENTS — that is to say, the protection of Intellectual Property and inventions. That is the part that I choked on (I’m a part-time inventor).

How did that relate to Asian body types, in your view?

Sunday morning they televised the eventing dressage on USA channel around 10:00 EST. The cross country phase was on Oxygen on Monday at 6:00 EST and the stadium jumping on Tuesday, Oxygen at 6:00 EST.

There seems to be more equestrian coverage than ever, and I was even suprise to see graphics with the test movements for some of the dressage riders. The announcers were also giving the movement scores during the rides.

I don’t know what the rest of the schedule is but imagine it’s on the NBC website.

Thanks for the info...I have basic cable, but nothing more than that. I think I get the USA channel, but definitely not Oxygen.

It seems to be analogy that uses a continuous source of irritation between the US and China for its reference. The analogy is weak in a forum where many users simply do not understand analogy and irony. I may be wrong but that would then be the only line in the post that would be offensive and I would not attribute malevolence to the poster until I see other things that would be consistent with a literal take on the phrase in question. I understand your sensitivity to the use of the word “patent,” though.

well...I think that’s what Karoyli was suggesting.
He remembers how the young’uns were easier to deal with.

Of course college rules are different and easier. They don’t call Elite gymnastics “elite” for nothing. The point is that there are skills that are no longer done because they contribute no points to the difficulty level. They look cool, but they’re not comparable to the skills that Nastia does.

I think what would help some of these posters understand that the US has Elite level Bars dynamos is film footage. And then to compare the same girls floor routines to the older girls. 14 is the age when I noticed the junior elites hit puberty. And they had to work that much harder to maintain their skill levels. Or they began to think about NOT going to the Olympics vs. working for a college scholarship. The young ladies who continue training at the Elite level are some real tough cookies! (not that the other gals aren’t. they keep training, but you can visibly see the stress relief when they quit worrying about pleasing the powers that be in the US gymnastics hierarchy.)

Comparing apples and oranges, BJungNan.

People are judging the ChiComm’s girl’s ages based in TV images, not on a static photo. Apparently some are seeing things in TV images to question ages based on movements and other factors.

You’ve been around here long enough to know better than to pull such a stupid stunt and ask us to guess an age based on a still image. The data is greatly limited in a still image and enhanced in moving image.

What’s your purpose for asking?

22!

I was off by three years... used to date a lovely Chinese Lady who looked 18, but was 38!

I don’t live on FR either! I retired comfortably at age 47, and don’t need no stinkin day job! Taxes are just as bad/worse however!

Actually, I enjoy my time as well. I was woodworking today to finish the wife’s vanity table. A choice of that or post to FR.

Now time for a dip in the pool to get all this sawdust off of me.
