The Associated Press reported Monday details of a proposal by the Interior and Commerce departments that would change how the 1973 law is implemented, allowing federal agencies to decide for themselves - without seeking the opinions of government wildlife experts - whether dams, highways and other projects have the potential to harm endangered species and habitats.

Current law requires federal agencies to consult with experts at the Fish and Wildlife Service and National Marine Fisheries Service if a project poses so much as a remote risk to species or habitats.

Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne defended the changes in a call with reporters Monday, calling them narrow modifications to make the law more clear and efficient.

In recent years, both federal agencies and developers have complained that the reviews, which can result in changes to projects that better protect species, have delayed work and increased costs...

Protecting animal species is a good thing to do, but when it tramples property rights and impedes progress, it should be weighed accordingly. Kangaroo rats and snail darters shouldn't hold up important work.

Scientists say there are millions of extinct species, yet here we are. I think we'll survive just fine without a few rats, if it comes to that.

I look forward to the day when communists like Obama are an endangered species. Unfortunately, they are abundant like locusts.

Rather they should be bbqed and cleared out to make way for progress.

I understand that wildlife biologists say that species die off every yr and have been from the beginning of time. New species are discovered every yr. However, the environmentalist wackos don't tell us this

The youth and the idealists shall always be with us, as will be the predators who prey upon their inexperience and naiveté to feed their own ambition and narcissism. And then there are the sheep who see themselves as sheepdogs, and who act as the priesthood for the wolves, herding the youth and the naive into the maws of destruction, fully comprehending the lies they tell, but not caring because what they do is for the greater good that only they can perceive.

And saving condors??? Yuk...

Condors feast upon rancid carcasses, urinate/defecate on their legs, and projectile vomit when they're nervous.

So what's not to love about a condor? ;)

If Bush had any brains he’d start coming out in favor of “various” things 80 percent America is FOR and wait for Obama to be AGAINST whatever that was.. then do it again and again... The Obama compaign would self destruct trying to bury itself keeping up..

If developers (an oxy-moron) had their way, there would be no regulations whatsoever. Just plow everything under and cover it with concrete.

Just a 100 years ago, there were 40,000 tigers in the world. Now they are on the edge of extinction. And they will be driven to extinction in the name of “progress” and “development.” And, of course, profit. Must not leave that out.
