Huckabee Supports Efforts To Keep Romney From VP Slot

Washington, D.C. (AHN) - Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee thinks having former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney as the vice presidential nominee is a bad idea, but not because Romney is a Mormon.

"I think a lot of people, not just social conservatives, but a lot of the Republicans I know are not necessarily comfortable with Romney," he told CBS. "But it has nothing to do with religion. It has everything to do with inconsistencies in positions he's held, and that's it."

Huckabee, a former Baptist minister whose long-shot presidential campaign was kept alive mainly by support from Evangelicals, was commenting on organized efforts by some of his backers in Michigan and Ohio to urge Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) not to choose Romney as running mate.

McCain told the Weekly Standard on Wednesday that he was open to choosing a vice presidential nominee who supports abortion.

Several current and former Republican officials have been reported to be in the running as McCain's vice president, including Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA), Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R) and former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge.

Romney, a former CEO of Bain and Co. who ended his bid for the Republican nomination in February, is reportedly on top of the shortlist. Pundits regard him as a good match for McCain, who has struggled to change perceptions that he is less adept on economic issues than Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL).

But many critics have also cited Romney's being a Mormon as a huge obstacle to his political aspirations. He has also been repeatedly criticized for changing his views on abortion and gay marriages; he initially supported abortion and same-sex unions but is now opposed to both. His home state of Massachusetts was the first state to legalize gay marriages.

A conservative political action committee, Government Is Not God, said as early as March that Romney "utterly unacceptable"as a vice presidential nominee.

Huckabee ended his bid for the Republican nomination in March after losing considerable support among Evangelical voters to former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, who is known for his opposition to abortion. He surprised everyone by winning the first contest of the primary season in Iowa, but failed to follow up with any other victories.

If you can read this article and understand it, you’ll understand the importance of the gold standard. Gold is free market money. What we have now is government-and-banker created money.

>> his family has avoided military service for over 150 years

Now your just making stuff up. On his paternal side he had ancestors in the Mormon Battallion which has the US Army record for longest overland march in history. On his maternal side he has military ancestors and relatives who served as well.

His father George Romney was 34 years old and had 3 children the outbreak of WWII. During the war he was managing Director of the Automobile Council for Wartime Production. He traveled extensively in pursuit of wartime production goals. The Wartime Production Automobile industry produced 1/5 of all WWII war materials. Converting auto industry to military vehicles as well as bomb shells, fuses, machine guns, artillery, AA guns, etc. George Romney contributed invaluable service to our wartime effort.

In the words of Norman Schwarzkopf "amatuers talk strategy professionals talk logistics".

Mitt Romney (and his Father) understand and follow Reagans approach to the military, “You can’t have a superpower military without a superpower economy.”

He raised Mass National Guard benefits more than any other Mass Gov. in history.

Conservative influence is weakened by their fanatical “litmus test” requirements for political leaders.

Unlike the "litmus test" that you yourself may have, or the Paulites may have (of which you may be one - I don't know) or the "litmus test" anyone may have. We all have our hot button issues. . .doesn't mean the other conservative issues aren't important to us.

Proof: The “religious right” killed the republican party in California and look at what we have now.

How, specifically, did the "religious right" kill the Republican party in CA? By the way, I'm expecting some proof from you, not just an opinion.

Check the resumes, Romney is the only one that qualifies. There could not be a better Vice President.

Of course, there could be from a conservative standpoint -- a VP that actually is conservative! Romney isn't. That is why he was named the #8 RINO in the nation by Human Events magazine in 2005.

Joe Lieberman has a better resume than Romney from a political standpoint if experience is all one is looking for.

Lieberman? Are you kidding? Lieberman voted against barring terrorists from the US and is gang-ho for amnesty. He is pro choice and supported Kerry's platform. Romney might not be an ultra conservative but was endorsed by Ann Coulter.

Romney's record in Massachusetts was every bit as liberal as Lieberman's is in the Senate.

But, that wasn't my point. My point is if that if resumes matter, Lieberman has a longer one.

It's absurd, though, with dozens of CONSERVATIVE Republican VP candidates that anyone would suggest a RINO like Romney is the best choice for Veep.

Romney isn't a conservative. I'll be happy to back that up if anyone wants to claim otherwise.

There is no way that the majority in California will support a far right “religious right” candidate for any statewide office. The only way the republican party could be successful in California is to be moderate. When you put a DEVISIVE issue such as FREEDOM of choice/birth under any circumstances as a litmus test you will guarantee political failure in the California environment. The proof is in the result: virtual democrat control and resulting failure - even with democrat failure to govern responsibly, they still retain power.

On his paternal side he had ancestors in the Mormon Battalion which has the US Army record for longest overland march in history.

That was in the 1840's just like I said, over 150 years.

Somehow he and his immediate family have managed not to serve in the Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq I, or Iraq II.

I find that astounding.

Families like his with such a cowardly record of non service to the nations armed forces are hard to come by.

Disgusting.

There are more ways to serve the nation’s defense than just the military. We prevailed in most modern wars by our economic ability to produce what was needed for a potential military victory. It took both support and execution for our success. The Romney family has been a significant factor in the support of those efforts.

So you’ve given me your opinion again. And you know what they say about opinions. ;)
