TBILISI, Aug 16 (Reuters) - Georgia's Interior Ministry said on Saturday that Russian troops had blown up a railway bridge about 45 km (30 miles) from the Georgian capital Tbilisi.

Ministry spokesman Shota Utiashvili said troops had destroyed the bridge in the Kaspi region west of Tbilisi, "paralysing the Georgian railway network". Reuters could not independently verify the report.

A Reuters correspondent saw Russian armoured personnel carriers and soldiers advance to the area on Friday from the Russian-occupied town of Gori near breakaway South Ossetia.

They were filmed yesterday on the Georgian Black Sea Coast destroying the remains of the Georgian Navy and Coastguard.

Well, then, in any final legal agreement, I would impose that they're going to have to provide restitution and replace those vessels.

From Wikipedia on the Battle for Tbilisi 1921.

...Retreating westward, the Georgian commander General Tsulukidze blew up railway bridges and demolished roads in an effort to delay the enemy’s advance. Simultaneously, Red Army units marched to Georgia from the north through the Daryal and Mamisoni passes and along the Black Sea coast towards Sukhumi. While these events were proceeding, the Soviet Commissar for Foreign Affairs issued a series of statements disclaiming all knowledge of military actions between Georgia and the Red Army, and professing willingness to mediate in any disputes which have arisen within Georgia.

There is no chance that the EU or the US will try to impose such conditions and, even if they did, Putin would just laugh at them. As long as it is Western rhetoric against Russian armor, Russia will win. The West needs to at least take deterrent actions such as stationing a sizable logistic and humantarian presence in Tbilisi and a small military force and equipment in Ukraine.

I think the idea of U.S. control of the air and seaports in an excellent idea. It’s time for a strong and visible humanitarian U.S. military response. The EU has in a few days proven again how useless they are.

Why? I don’t condone their action, but it really is the Russians inflicting their version of punishment and humiliation on the Georgian President and his armed forces. Do you honestly think that they are going to leave in place all captured Georgian forces equipment completely as they found it? No army is ever going to do that. The tactics are disable, destroy or keep it themselves.

Under conflict those naval boats are legitimate targets. When the U.S. pulled back out of Iraq in 1991 they blew up and disabled Iraqi aircraft on the airfields that they over-ran.

The U.S. didn’t take control. It was the Georgian President jumping the gun and announcing it to the world as if it was fact. It was not the case. The U.S. was quick to announce that the Georgian President’s assumptions were incorrect.

“We are not looking to, nor do we need to, take control of any air or sea ports to conduct this mission,” Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell said.

Only in your eyes. You are under the assumption that Russian was seeking to join up with Iran in some sort of land route theory. Literally in your eyes the sky was falling and the Evil Soviet Empire was on the march again. Next in your eyes was Ukraine and any other state that took their fancy!

When are they leaving Georgia proper ? Give me an exact day.

Literally in your eyes the sky was falling and the Evil Soviet Empire was on the march again.

Half the world thinks that now.

They are never leaving Georgia! It was all an evil plot. Russian forces are now heading for the Armenian border. Latest news is that Iranian forces have crossed into Armenian territory as an agreed slice up of Armenian territory.

The two forces are scheduled to meet up around lunchtime tomorrow. The flow of Russian weapons will start immediately through the Russian-Iranian road link. Expect an update tomorrow on how Russian forces are now heading for the Persian Gulf.

I know you’re a Buchananite (or maybe a leftist, it’s hard to tell the difference) who thinks he’s being witty, but this scenario is really not that far-fetched.

The US has been watching Iran in the ME, all the while ignoring the growing connection between Russia and Iran. When the Russians started arming and assisting Iran several years ago, we did give it a look, but we wrote it all off to simple Russian greed and the willingness to sell arms to anybody rather than a calculated strategy of building up an alliance.

You do know, don’t you, that Russia and Iran both have “petroleum technicians” throughout the sympathetic left-wing governments of Venezuela and other gas and oil producing nations in its political sphere, and are clearly working together in trying to consolidate their joint power over vital oil supplies.

The Russians think that they can ally with Iran and use it against us. The Russians are fools and will end up losing to Iran, because the Russians still have one disadvantage against the Muslims: most Russians want to live. The Muslims don’t care.

But in the meantime, Russia and Iran are definitely tag-teaming each other, at the least, and I think this will become clearer as time goes by.
