Afghanistan: A U.S. base attacked for the 2nd consecutive day

KABUL - A U.S. military base in eastern Afghanistan was attacked Tuesday, after a suicide car bombing that killed 10 civilians before its doors, it was learned from the strength of the NATO in the country.

"We have little details at the moment because the fighting continues on the spot, but I have heard of suicide bombers. The base is also under fire" from mortars or rocket launchers, told the 'AFP an official of the International Force for Security Assistance (Isaf) of NATO, who requested anonymity.

Monday, ten Afghan civilians were killed and 13 wounded in a suicide car bombing claimed by the Taliban for this American base, located in the province of Khost in eastern Afghanistan.

The more active they are, the faster they die out.

Sounds like either someone tipped us off, or a group with choreography stiffer than a 1960's era zombie movie approached the base.

Kabul fears Taliban will attack top brass

August 18, 2008
Hamilton Spectator wire services
Kabul, Afghanistan (Aug 18, 2008)

The Afghan government ordered 7,000 police officers onto the streets of Kabul to guard against attacks on senior leaders during Independence Day celebrations today, responding to signs of the Taliban’s growing strength near the capital.

Even the location of the celebration of Afghanistan’s 89th anniversary of independence from Britain was kept secret and will be closed to the public to try to minimize the risk, insurgents could again disrupt a national commemoration.

Taliban violence has spiked across Afghanistan in recent days, including an ambush on a NATO convoy yesterday, attacks on police checkpoints and a roadside bomb targetting a police convoy. More than 90 people were killed over four days — most of them reportedly Taliban insurgents.

Kabul so far has been spared the violence afflicting much of Afghanistan, but there are signs the Taliban and other militant groups have gained a foothold in neighbouring provinces. And the capital suffered spectacular bomb attacks this year against an international hotel and the Indian Embassy.

Interior Ministry spokesperson Zemarai Bashary said more than 5,000 extra police were drafted for what he described as the biggest operation of its kind in Kabul since 2001, when U.S.-led forces ousted the Taliban government.

A legislator from Kandahar, who is critical of Karzai’s government, said the police deployment has more to do with protecting the government’s reputation than reassuring the public.

“Unless they bring some comprehensive changes in the security, this deployment will not affect people’s confidence,” Khalid Pashtun said.

Pashtun said there has been a steady increase in kidnappings, robberies and other crimes this year.

“People are afraid to leave their house after 7 p.m.,” he said.

Kandahar’s provincial police Chief Matiullah Khan, meanwhile, said security in the volatile southern province, where the majority of Canada’s 2,500 troops are based, will also be beefed up for prior to the festivities.

thanks for the post. My friend's son is over there with the Marines in some "ghost" town between mountains where the Taliban are hiding. I'm just glad he's able to call her fairly frequently. He told her they've had quite a few casualties, but he's in his "element".

Here he is in Afghanstan as of a month or so ago. He's wearing the bandana I gave him before he left--it has Scripture quotes on it.

The bomber failed to penetrate the base, and no American military personnel were wounded in the explosion, the military said.

Another suicide bomber in a car soon followed. His attempt was thwarted but he escaped.

Taliban warns Canada: leave or be targeted
Ottawa calls threat ‘disgusting’ bid to justify killings
Scott Deveau and Linda Nguyen, Canwest News Service
Published: Monday, August 18, 2008

The Taliban issued a dire warning to Canada on Sunday: if it does not withdraw its troops from Afghanistan, insurgents will continue to target Canadians in the country, as they did earlier this week in an ambush on female aid workers outside Kabul.

In an open letter, the Taliban urged Canadians to press their government to withdraw troops from Afghanistan or risk further attack.

“The Afghans did not go to Canada to kill the Canadians. Rather, it is the Canadians who came to Afghanistan to kill and torture the Afghan,” the letter states, adding they felt Canada was pandering to the United States in doing so.

Will do. I know you pray for them all. I have another friend’s son (also a Marine) who was heading to Afghanistan, but there was a change of plans. they’ve stopped their platoon in Okinawa and won’t be officially deployed until after the election...
