What's Next for Ted Kennedy
Time Magazine ^ | August 20, 2008 | Sanjay Gupta, M.D.

Posted on 08/20/2008 1:32:06 PM PDT by Zakeet

Somewhere deep inside the brain of Senator Edward Kennedy, the neurons in his left parietal lobe were becoming angry. Something had invaded their territory in this part of the brain — located at about eye level, just behind the ear — and they were about to react in a way that would frighten the Senator and those around him. The neurons sparked a burst of electrical activity, causing a seizure that made parts of his body become rigid and start to shake.

As with most patients, there was really no way for the Senator to pick up on any warning signs prior to that first seizure. A vague headache at some point in the past, possibly some numbness in his right arm, maybe even the inability to think of a certain word when speaking. Any of these things may have easily been forgotten or dismissed. A seizure, on the other hand, is the medical equivalent of a flashing neon sign. For doctors, it is a call to action, spurring those in my field of neurosurgery into medical mystery-solving mode. What exactly caused the seizure? In Kennedy's case, an MRI scan revealed the source of the neural storm: a big clump of cells that probably looked like an octopus with tentacles reaching into other areas of the brain. It was a tumor, and doctors had to figure out just how bad it was.

Each year in the U.S., some 40,000 people receive a diagnosis of this fast-growing cancer — which in its most malicious form, known as a glioblastoma, often forces the neurosurgeon to tell the patient that chances are they won't live longer than a year, even with the most aggressive therapies. In the past 20 years, the grim survival statistics have barely budged.

I agree. I read someplace that the secular left deifies its heroes because it has no other gods. And in the same way it makes demons of its enemies so that is alright to say nasty things about them and celebrate their death.

Conservatives should be better than that, and most are. A simple “De mortus nihil nisi bonum” ( Of the dead nothing but good) should suffice.

"Prayers for him and the family. If God can forgive him, so can we."

How do you know God is going to forgive him? Don't you have to be sorry and ask for forgiveness to be forgiven or are you playing God? What a complete joke, excuse me, murder this wretched piece of vermin this scum is, and will always be now and in the afterlife....hopefully it will be in Hell.

The man should retire and spend whatever time he has left on Earth trying to atone for the evil he has caused. I wish no further ill befall him, however. That’s definitely above my pay-grade.

Kennedy needs to do the right thing and step down and enjoy the rest of his days with his family and friends. Get over his own ego and let politics go already. There is a time to quit when it comes to your career and now is the time.

I am no fan of this man at all...his ego of staying in the Senate is disgusting. He has more important issues to take care of...like his health and family.

"We need to get rid of this blight on human health as quickly as possible."

So true. Cancer is among the original equal opportunity diseases. It's possible for anyone to get it, old or young, good or bad, stringent lifestyle or someone who is a little looser in their habits. Having lost a few dear family members to it, I don't think that I could wish it's suffering upon anyone except, if I had to name someone, bin Laden. Of course he's probably already dead.

I hope the Senator gives us all a sincere apology for all the screwups he has caused.

Read my post. The first clause of your question is exactly what I said. God "can" forgive him. Not that God has forgiven him. I don't know whether this event has caused him to accept the Lord and repent.

Remember the prodigal son. He was a wastrel and messed up in every possible way. And his father rejoiced at his return. Teddy's Father will rejoice at his, if Teddy decides to come back. And He will rejoice all the more because of the huge distance Teddy has put between himself and the Lord in a wicked life.

I wouldn’t wish cancer on my worst enemy. It killed my dad in his 50s. NOT a pleasant way to go. May God bless your remaining days and have mercy on you when you stand before Him, Mr. Kennedy.
