Michelle keeps things down to earth

DENVER — Could the Democrats be about to nominate the wrong Obama?

Well, probably not. But Michelle Obama, Barack’s wife, gave an awfully good speech at the Democratic National Convention here Monday night. While Barack can sometimes soar off into the clouds, Michelle tends to keep things down to earth.

“The Barack Obama I know today is the same man I fell in love with 19 years ago,” she said. “He’s the same man who drove me and our new baby daughter home from the hospital 10 years ago this summer, inching along at a snail’s pace, peering anxiously at us in the rearview mirror, feeling the whole weight of her future in his hands.”

She was describing a simple moment, a real moment, an emotional moment and one that made only one point: Barack Obama is a human being just like you. He is not an “other,” he is not a “celebrity.” He is a father, a husband, a person.

---snip---

And then something followed that is virtually unheard of at a political convention: an unscripted moment. In a live video hookup with Barack, who was in Kansas City, the two Obama daughters — Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, who had joined their mother on stage — simply talked to their father. He asked them how they thought their mother had done in her speech.

I find that I was mistaken in my assumptions about Malia, at least:
"The girl's name Malia \m(a)-lia\ is pronounced ma-LEE-ah. It is of Hawaiian origin, and its meaning is "perhaps, probably". Variant of Mary. Also a Spanish variant of Maria. Malia has 3 variant forms: Malea, Maleah and Maleia. For more information, see also the related name Amelia. Baby names that sound like Malia are Melia, Mali and Mala. Malia is a popular female first name and a popular surname (source: 1990 U.S. Census).

Obviously, "Malia" is a good choice considering Barack's background.

Sasha:
The boy's and girl's name Sasha \s(a)-sha\ is pronounced SAH-shah. It is of Russian origin. Short form of Alexander (Greek) "man's defender". The -sha ending may not be feminine in Russia, though it is in the US. Sasha has 6 variant forms: Sacha, Sasa, Sascha, Saschenka, Sasheen and ZsaZsa. For more information, see also related names Saskia and Alexandra.

From what I can see it appeared to be a dysfunctional upbringing and what we see now is the end result. Father absent and then the mother blew him off..to the grandparents..?

I see where they were going with Mrs Obama's speech. They were trying to make her seem like a regular person that middle America could relate to. There was something about it that seemed empty and hollow though, all the words without the music.

Interesting. He took things slow and careful with the responsibility of fatherhood, but rushed headlong into seeking the Presidency, after serving a tiny fraction of a Senate term in the Congress.

I wonder what sped him up?

Typical All American family, those Obamas.

We all have associations with terrorists, mentored by racists, pal around with Nation of Islam, have good friends who ensure we make the very best of real estate deals, get cushy hospital jobs at 6 figures, pay 10k for piano lessons.

Yep, those Obamas are real, true, down to earth Americans just like Joe & Jill Everyday.

The makeover was nice, especially the hair straightening. Wonder if she was going to improve education by giving Blacks the same choice in schools her daughters’ have?

The video seemed “prepared”.

Like Barry Hussein Obama was already recorded, and the girls were asking questions to a tape. They were prompted what questions to ask, and when.

It looked like it got “out of synch” when one of the girls took the microphone.

No longer were his “answers” related to the “questions”

Dunno why he would do that, or even if it’s true, but it looked like that to me.

He can't even talk to his family without a teleprompter.

Sasha’s name is actually Natasha. They just call her Sasha...

And Natasha is an increasingly common name, I went to school with several girls in a small country town who in no way had russian connections, but their parents apparently liked the name.

“He can’t even talk to his family without a teleprompter. “

THAT’S IT! Thank you. I really did have problems reconciling that one until you pointed that out for me.

It’s nice to have ones thoughts validated.

The only good thing about her speech was her supressed anger.

You noticed that ,too. I commented to the wife she looked very unnatural giving that speech, like it was forced.Yeah, I watched it only because “The King of Queens” was a rerun we’ve seen about three times.

Has there ever been a more perfect example of the "Look At Me!" generation. This guy has accomplished almost nothing noteworthy in his life so we have to hear about such mundane trivia as if it makes him important.

My impression was similar to yours. I thought she seemed nervous/anxious. That's understandable of course, but I felt it, and it distracted from the content. She rushed the speech, and she spoke in a somewhat high pitched anxiety voice.

Beyond that, it was a prepared speech with a specific purpose. She looked pretty. She read the words. I missed the little staged event with the kiddies because I tuned out of the speech at some point. It was boring and I didn't buy it, but then, go figure.
