Four arrested over 'plot against Obama'

Authorities in Colorado today said four arrests had been made in connection with firearms and drug offences in the city hosting the Democratic National Convention.

Denver officials refused to immediately confirm local media reports linking the arrests to a possible attempt on the life of Barack Obama, who is due to make his key address to the conference on Thursday.

"We can say this - we're absolutely confident there is no credible threat to the candidate, the Democratic national convention or the people of Colorado," the Colorado US attorney, Troy Eid, said in a statement.

The local KCNC-TV station reported that four people had been detained by police following a traffic stop in the Denver suburb of Aurora on Sunday after officers saw a 28-year-old man driving erratically in a rented pickup truck.

The TV station, quoting police sources, said two high-powered rifles with scopes, walkie talkies, camouflage clothing, driving licences and the drug methamphetamine were found in the truck.

Police then traced the man back to a local hotel, the Cherry Tree, which led to further arrests, including a man being injured while jumping from a window in order to evade arrest.

The wounded man was believed to have ties to white supremacist organisations and was wearing a ring with a swastika, the station said, claiming the men had told police that they intended to kill Obama.

The Denver Post newspaper said only two men had been arrested, but reported that a news conference was being scheduled for today to discuss the case.

It said authorities were more sceptical about any organised plot to kill Obama.

How about a plot to put rounds into the stadium itself, packed with people like sardines?

“Ties to white supremacists”

Yeah? Name the group!

Naturally, anyone wearing a swastika is “obviously” a WS.

If he were a member of the “Sons of Silence”, (which by the way has never had a RICO bust) he might wear a swastika ring, or he might just be a misguided goth.

The assumptions made in this story are too pat to believe.

The folks made those “statements” while (mile) high on meth.

Cheap press and cheap theatrics by all involved.

That may or may not be case, but I think we can rule out the Mormon Tabernacle Choir...

I’m always amazed that people in the middle of criminal acts do really stupid things to attract attention to themselves.

Here in Philly not that long ago, a couple of clowns carrying a huge load of cocaine were driving aggressively on I-95 and all the calls to the cops got them stopped and then arrested.

One story at Drudge says that target was Obama, the other says “no credible threat”.

DENVER (AP) - Authorities are investigating whether a man arrested with rifles, ammunition and drugs in his truck made statements threatening Barack Obama, but emphasize he never posed a “credible threat” to the candidate or the Democratic National Convention. Federal and local authorities had scheduled a news conference for Tuesday afternoon, but U.S. Attorney Troy Eid downplayed the case. “We’re absolutely confident there is no credible threat to the candidate, the Democratic National Convention, or the people of Colorado,” Eid said in a statement.

“That may or may not be case, but I think we can rule out the Mormon Tabernacle Choir...”

Yeah, but don’t give the left any ideas. The REALLY funny part of it is, is that if someone is in a plot to kill a left winger, of any color, it’s obviously an isiduous plot by some shady right wing group (regardless of evidence). BUT, the beltway sniper fiasco comes to mind when the show is on the other foot.

“I’m always amazed that people in the middle of criminal acts do really stupid things to attract attention to themselves.”

Makes me think they’re too stupid to actually have hatched such a plot.

Let’s see. McVeigh, expired tags. These guys, driving erratically.

Smart enough to hatch a scheme, but not smart enough to avoid being caught...even for a day. That’s why I doubt the veracity of the information on an organized plan.

camouflage clothing

If I saw a couple of guys running around DC in camie fatigues carrying rifles I wouldn't suspect a thing. They would just blend in with all the 1000 dollar suits and alligator shoes.

This statement is not credible. A US attorney acting sensibly and rationally. No way.

I just finished looking at a picture of Denver. Now I may be wrong, but it doesn’t look like there’s anything tall enough WITHIN 750 yards to see inside Invesco.

Besides, I don’t think a meth head could pull off a 750 yard shot. If he did the zero-ing himself, he’s likely to end up hitting Canada.

If there was an actual plot, I’d assume that the FBI had infiltrated the group years ago, and busted them for the “erratic driving” when they were actually in the area with weapons.
