Texas students pack bookbags; teachers pack heat

HARROLD, Texas — Along with normal first-day jitters and excitement, students in this tiny district started school Monday wondering which teachers might be toting firearms.

"It was kind of awkward knowing that some teachers were carrying guns," said Adam Lira, 17, a senior. "I don't feel like they should be, 'cause we already have locked doors and cameras. But I didn't feel threatened by it."

Several parents said they had no idea that employees of the K-12 school were allowed to carry concealed guns on campus until recent publicity about the school board's policy, approved quietly last fall. They said they were upset that the rural community near the Oklahoma border had not been able to give input.

While some parents said they felt their children were safer, others opposed the plan, which appears to be the first of its kind nationwide.

"pack heat"...

That's some objective journalism....

When is that hoary old mischaracterization going to die the death it deserves?

"It was kind of awkward knowing that some teachers were carrying guns," said Adam Lira, 17, a senior. "I don't feel like they should be, 'cause we already have locked doors and cameras. But I didn't feel threatened by it."

This is why I cringe when anyone tells me how bright their children are. There is no critical thinking going on here, just feeeeeelings, nothing more than feeeeeeeelings.

When seconds count the police are just minutes away.

This is not a slam against the police.

How would Columbine have been different if teachers had been armed, or any of the other school school shootings?

How about the Church shootings, what if some one in the congregation had been carrying?

How about the Church shootings...

In the original Texas CC law, churches were one of the prohibited carry places. The churches lobbied to and changed that after a horible shooting incident.

At least Texas churchgoers, and some school boards, are smart enough to grasp the obvious.

As a former college professor in Texas and CHL holder, I am glad to hear this. I’ve been stalked by students and had one student become violent in the classroom. Just the knowledge that your teacher may be carrying might quell some of the classroom nonsense.

Of course, this will evolve into the usual debate by the gun-phobes. But, I wholeheartedly support it. If my kids were still in school I’d feel they were safer.

We had an incident on Sunday. A some what dishevleld man walked into our Church and up ontot he altar. Our Deacon shoed off, but the man hung out in one of the side aisles. He was carrying a backpack and had a glassy look in his eye.

I told my wife that if I get out of the pew she is to drop down and stay out of sight until I came back to get her.

The only thing I was carrying was my Leatherman Wave, but it was better than nothing.

Fortuneately the man was just a homeless guy looking for a hand out and not looking for trouble.

I am strongly reconsidering carrying 24/7 after taht incident.

It has been said that the deacons in our Texas church now constitute one of the best trained — and best armed — security forces outside the U.S. military...

I’d like to move to a nice, small town where most everybody knows each other, and where the Sheriff can rely on citizens for help if need be.

Only thing is, I’d probably want to go to a bunch of towns, and I don’t want to be a drifter.

Okay, enough rambling

Locked doors = free-fire killing zone of a known, defined size.

The church shooting where two people died outside the church, but the shooter was killed when he entered the church?

I was thinking of the one where 70 some were shot in Colorado, and th ones shot in Pennsylvania last year.
