Romney is more conservative than either Obama or Biden in total and that makes him more preferred than either. Case closed.

And, there are literally dozens of candidates for VP FAR more conservative and trustworthy than Romney. There is no reason not to fight for a true believer in conservatism on the ticket.

He can shore up Colorado, Nevada, Montana and MAYBE, just MAYBE, grab enough votes with his family name in Michigan to win it.

He really doesn't in western states because Mormons overwhelming vote Republican and are far more likely voters than the average citizen.

From Mitt supporters, lower expectations are a must...

After all, Mitt passes their bar as a “conservative”...

1. His position on illegal immigrants. 2. His stance fighting radical islam.

We can't find a candidate strong on those issues that doesn't have a liberal record and a history of being a flip-flopper?

Jealousy was definitely a factor.

The major factor was that he's not a conservative, he just plays one on TV. Had Romney been the least bit credible as a conservative, he would have been the nominee.

I don’t understand why people think a liberal, blow in the wind politician like Mitt Rommney would somehow add ‘conservatism’ to the ticket.

Could you tell us the difference between Romney and Giuliani, especially on the issue of abortion?

Romney, like me, is personally and morally opposed to abortion, but because he is a conservative he was opposed to abortion being outlawed. He has now changed his position and believes that the unborn should be legally protected.

I have never heard or seen evidence that Giuliani is personally or morally opposed to abortion.

romney won't do squat to deliver MI. anyone that would vote for romney will already be voting for mccain.

The polling I have seen indicates that Romney would increase Republicans chances of winning the state.

Kabar is right...it is pursuing the chimera. If the American people are willing to nominate a Black for President, being a Mormon is a petty issue.
Mean-spirited, plagiarizng “Plugs” Biden needs to be countered with an attack dog...Giuliani has too much heavy duty baggage...Romney’s baggage is trivial...especially compared to his stature, appeal, intelligence and articulateness!

The problem with Romney — on a pure political level -— is that a significant percentage of people actually dispise the man so much that they will stay home.

When he is running the "Straight-Talk II" campaign, the last thing McCain needs is Romney's perceived insincerity (which is my theory why so many people don't like Romney).

Excellent article, and just the tip of the iceberg as to why Slick Willard is 100% UNACCEPTABLE and UNQUALIFIED to be on the Presidential/VP ticket, period.

Precisely. One of the most astonishingly insincere individuals I’ve ever seen in politics. The old joke does indeed apply to him... how do you tell when Slick Willard is lying ? When his mouth is open.

“At least three candidates – Huckabee, Giuliani, Thompson – decided that they simply preferred beating Romney and effectively worked together to stop him.”

I don’t recall Thompson EVER working WITH the Huckster. In fact, I don’t think those 2 even get along at all.

Why the Romney supporters just refuse to acknowledge Romney's high negatives is beyond me. Why in the world would McCain want to bring in a man with such high negatives that would sink his campaign????

I supported Romney in the primaries, but clearly recognize his downside on this ticket. I'm not the only one here who supported Romney, yet can be realistic about whether he would help or hurt McCain.

Given Frum’s backtracking on the charge of Bush being the “right man” which he wrote a book about I have much doubt about his insights.

I don’t think much of Frum; my two points in the first post being the more germane. (Frum’s No.1 is stupid.)

You can have a candidate with that fire in the belly if you want, but I’m a bit skeptical of any man or woman who desires power to the point it shows.

I liked Fred. All I'm saying is his actions didn't go with his talk. He didn't seem to be pursuing the Presidency as if he really wanted it.

This Primary season was disappointing. My first choice was Hunter, my second Fred. It got me nowhere.
