Steyn: Hostess with the Moosest

The hostess with the moosest

   Mark Steyn

Over in the Frumistan province of the NR caliphate, our pal David is not happy about the Palin pick. I am - for several reasons.

First, Governor Palin is not merely, as Jay describes her, "all-American", but hyper-American. What other country in the developed world produces beauty queens who hunt caribou and serve up a terrific moose stew? As an immigrant, I'm not saying I came to the United States purely to meet chicks like that, but it was certainly high on my list of priorities. And for the gun-totin' Miss Wasilla then to go on to become Governor while having five kids makes it an even more uniquely American story. Next to her resume, a guy who's done nothing but serve in the phony-baloney job of "community organizer" and write multiple autobiographies looks like just another creepily self-absorbed lifelong member of the full-time political class that infests every advanced democracy.

Second, it can't be in Senator Obama's interest for the punditocracy to spends its time arguing about whether the Republicans' vice-presidential pick is "even more" inexperienced than the Democrats' presidential one.

Third, real people don't define "experience" as appearing on unwatched Sunday-morning talk shows every week for 35 years and having been around long enough to have got both the War on Terror and the Cold War wrong. (On the first point, at the Gun Owners of New Hampshire dinner in the 2000 campaign, I remember Orrin Hatch telling me sadly that he was stunned to discover how few Granite State voters knew who he was.) Sarah Palin and Barack Obama are more or less the same age, but Governor Palin has run a state and a town and a commercial fishing operation, whereas (to reprise a famous line on the Rev Jackson) Senator Obama ain't run nothin' but his mouth. She's done the stuff he's merely a poseur about. Post-partisan? She took on her own party's corrupt political culture directly while Obama was sucking up to Wright and Ayers and being just another get-along Chicago machine pol (see his campaign's thuggish attempt to throttle Stanley Kurtz and Milt Rosenberg on WGN the other night).

Fourth, Governor Palin has what the British Labour Party politician Denis Healy likes to call a "hinterland" - a life beyond politics. Whenever Senator Obama attempts anything non-political (such as bowling), he comes over like a visiting dignitary to a foreign country getting shanghaied into some impenetrable local folk ritual. Sarah Palin isn't just on the right side of the issues intellectually. She won't need the usual stage-managed "hunting" trip to reassure gun owners: she's lived the Second Amendment all her life. Likewise, on abortion, we're often told it's easy to be against it in principle but what if you were a woman facing a difficult birth or a handicapped child? Been there, done that.

Fifth, she complicates all the laziest Democrat pieties. Energy? Unlike Biden and Obama, she's been to ANWR and, like most Alaskans, supports drilling there.

Sixth (see Kathleen's link to Craig Ferguson), I kinda like the whole naughty librarian vibe.

Upon reading this early this morning, I sent Steyn this email:
One more point:

The pointy-heads argue that Palin undermines McCain's "inexperienced" charge against Obama.

But isn't it likely McCain had gotten all he could out of that charge? Like generals fighting the last war, the pundits assume that was going to be McCain's campaign theme throughout the fall.

It appears to me McCain is pivoting and will now go after Obama's "change" message. You want change? Look at what Palin has achieved in her (short) time in office! Add her record to McCain's history of shaking up Washington and you get a real potential for "change".

I think McCain is preparing for the next phase of the campaign: who will really take on the entrenched bureaucracies and corrupt practices in Washington? Again, the pundits simply presume Obama owns the change message....another mistake.

Further, as for being inexperienced, why the emphasis on the TIME she's been in office. Republicans should counter that it's more about what one has DONE. Make a list of the reforms Palin has accomplished in the last 2 years as governor. Put those beside what Obama and Biden have done since 2006 (hold hearings, run for prez). She comes off pretty well in that comparison. Jeanne

Hyper-American, indeed!

And here's a video showing that NRA Lifetime Member & Commander of the Alaska National Guard Governor Palin knows what the 2nd Amendment is for:

Yes, but Obama has been “thinking” about national security issues for four years. And he has national security “exposure.”

I just worry that Palin might say something that demonstrates her lack of experience, like saying that the President should unconditionally meet with leaders of terrorist nations. Because of Obama’s national security “exposure,” he’d never say something like that. /sarcasm off/

This ticket is the first real "Change" ticket to come along in my lifetime. Name one other ticket that had a Governor who sent back Federal Money for a pork barrel project with the functional equivalent of saying "No thanks, we can do without corrupt pork barrel money. Give it back to those you stole it from."?

McCain has been (to his credit) a fighter against government waste, but as a member of the Senate he has been a mere voice crying in the wilderness. We now have two candidates who are willing to buck the system and radically change the way the Government has been working (or not working)

If any ticket represents "CHANGE" it is McCain/Palin. I feel right now that my finanacial contributions to this ticket will be paid back to me tenfold.

I am energized. Palin was the perfect pick!

There truly is "HOPE" for America!

See photos at #22. This is a real person. Say what you like, but Obama is a caricature, so is Biden, the Clintons, and the other insiders of Washington.

This is a gun-totin’ frontier woman from Alaska, and I’m willing to fight for this ticket.

As Governor of Alaska, she is the "Commander in Chief" of the troops she is seated with there. That was not a "Photo Op". That was the visit of a Military Commander with the troops under her command.

Cool! No climb at all on a one second burst—now there’s a lady that knows all about the proper definition of “gun control”!

Palin represents the kind of woman that built this great country.

Tough at nails and keeps the home fires burning.

Smith grads will detest her, but fly over country women will go gaga.

I liked this one on Biden-—

This ticket says 2 things:

1. Energy Independence (or closer), and
2. Earmarks must die

As Governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin has a long ocean interface with the 200 mile boundary of Russia in the Bering Sea. She and her husband are also part of a commercial fishing business. We have a picture above of Palin raising the antlers of fresh-killed dinner.

I’ll bet she has personal opinions about fishing operations with many international competitors, to include Putin’s fisheries. And the willingness to take down an elk says that she’s not afraid to shoot to kill.

And .. as usual .. Steyn weighs in with the substance and the real reasons the liberals won’t like her and will be willing to tell whopper lies to destroy her.

As for the “brother-in-law” she purportedly fired - I say more power to her for sticking up for her sister - and why was it a bad thing to fire a guy who was a wife-beater ..??

I am very pleased with Gov Palin already .. I admire women who are strong enough to do what needs to be done and who are not afraid of what people might say.
