Evangelicals rally behind Palin after pregnancy news

ST. PAUL, Minnesota (CNN) -- Key evangelical leaders rallied to Sarah Palin's support Monday amid news that her 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, was having a child.

"Before, they were excited about her, with the Down syndrome baby," conservative, anti-tax activist Grover Norquist said. "But now with this, they are over the moon. It reinforces the fact that this family lives its pro-life values."

Palin and John McCain oppose abortion and have supported promoting abstinence in schools, which would seem to make Bristol Palin's pregnancy an inconveniently timed development.

But she is keeping the child, a fact that could make the Alaska governor -- whose candidacy has been enthusiastically embraced by evangelicals who regard her as one of their own -- even more popular among that key GOP voting bloc.

"Fortunately, Bristol is following her mother and father's example of choosing life in the midst of a difficult situation," Family Research Council president Tony Perkins said. "We are committed to praying for Bristol and her husband-to-be and the entire Palin family as they walk through a very private matter in the eyes of the public."

Evangelical leader Richard Land also backed Palin completely.

"This is the pro-life choice. The fact that people will criticize her for this shows the astounding extent to which the secular critics of the pro-life movement just don't get it," Land said in a statement.

Sometimes I am but on this issue I am not sure that is true. Don’t worry I am still voting for McCain and Palin.

Many kids do dumb things and her daughter did make a mistake. The most important factor is ensuring that she takes responsibility for her actions and it seemns like she has. I hear that she is getting married soon. My oldest daughter made this same mistake, but at 17. She also got married at the time. I am as conservative as they come and she knew I was very unhappy with her at first. She was deeply worried about how I would react when I found out and was greatly relieved to find out that I would never disown her. I just told her that her childhhod is officially over and that she will have to take responsbility for her actions, including being a good parent and wife.

She has. After 10 years of marriage and 3 grand kids later all is fine with her and my Son-in-law.

Can you imagine how Chelsea would have been treated if she got pregnant? This double standard is sickening.

No come on, you are being unfair. If Chelsea had gotten pregnant at 16 or 17 there would have been thousands of Freepers praising Chelsea's decision to keep the baby and lauding Bill and Hillary's Parenting skills.

Yes, I know there is someone out there who has a brother-in-law whose next door neighbor's third cousin twice removed knows a DC abortion doctor who performed a total of 37 abortions for Chelsea and the Gore girls.

Wonderful news. Thank you for posting. What this country does not need is Obama.

let’s not be in jubilation over a 17 year old having a baby. Sheesh...

I don't see a bit of jubilation that a 17 year old got pregnant, but a lot that she has guts like her mother and values her own child's life over her own "freedom".

Every thing is in proper order here, relax. -grin-

I can’t understand how they can say something is ok for one 17 year old but not another.

They aren't, it is all in your mind. Not one post says it is ok for her to have gotten pregnant out of wedlock.

Why invent an offense, then spend your time painting it on others instead of joining in the subject being discussed. Go back to the start and read this again, you get a failing grade on comprehension. Pay special attention to the point of walking the talk, instead of just talking the walk. (an Obama specialty)

I am all for not bashing Bristol and her family, but this is getting too much. Glorifying pre-marital sex is just something I never would have witnessed on FR.

I suspect most people here would say that it would have been wiser for Bristol and her boyfriend/fiancé to have waited until they were married before having sex, so as to avoid subjecting a baby to the possibility of being raised without a father. Since it seems the boyfriend/fiancé is going to stick around, however, things should turn out okay.

Having apparently survived that risk, Bristol's pregnancy serves to undermine abortion advocates' claim that "pro-life people only oppose abortion because none of them are unexpectedly pregnant". Such claims resonate very well in the heads of those with Liberal Mind Fog Disorder, so undermining such claim will be very helpful.
