NEW YORK (AP) - As a television draw, John McCain was every bit the equal of Barack Obama. The GOP presidential candidate attracted roughly the same number of viewers to his convention acceptance speech Thursday as Obama did before the Democrats last week, according to Nielsen Media Research.
It marked the end of an astonishing run where more than 40 million people watched political speeches on three nights by Obama, McCain and Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin. The Republican convention was the most-watched convention on television ever, beating a standard set by the Democrats a week earlier.

Not bad since it was opening night for NFL.
I didn’t watch McCain’s night.
Zerobama’s toadies in the “media” are saying one thing but the “Obama Camp” knows what is going on. Their internal polls are telling them something different. The “media” polls are out there just to keep Zerobama’s base “energized.”
And at least two great chants came out of the convention:
“Drill, baby, drill!”
“Zero!”
The second one goes very well with the Obama salute, and will continue to remind people of Obama’s executive experience.
Were there others as well?
And our guys did it with three fewer broadcast networks than the Dems had.
Now, if the Dems hadn’t overreacted to McCain’s surprise choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate, the MSM might not have gone on such a voracious feeding frenzy of attacks on Sarah.
That created so much buzz and interest in Gov. Palin that it virtually guaranteed a record viewership for our convention.
Thank you MSM. Ironically, that’s the only time you’ve helped the Republicans in the last 40 years, and you actually meant to hurt us.
Let’s hope you keep misreading the field from this point on.
We’re on fire now. No doubt about it.
Energized? Heh... more like they're keeping them from committing suicide. LOL
Fox News was reporting 39.8 for McCain and 38.4 for Obama. I saw 40 million for Sarah Palin but now they are saying 37. I wonder if that is to keep her number under Obamas.
I think you are more correct than I am. I guess maybe that’s what I meant by “energized.” LOL!
I knew what you meant, but I couldn’t pass up a great opening like that one! ;-)
Polls are phony and are used to push agendas. Anyone who regulates their careers and lives by polls is a fool. Do you think Sarah lifts a finger in the breeze to make a decision? Heck, she’s been fighting for what’s right for YEARS while we have sat on our a**es hoping someone would do it for us.
Well, here she is, shall we join her?? She has shown us MEN how to lead, how to stand up for what’s right, basically, she has shamed a whole bunch of us!
Thanks Sarah, I’ll take that lesson (at 66 no less) and hopefully make you proud.
Those 30 something millions are from 10 networks (for Obama) and 6 networks (for McCain and Palin, as BET, and Hispanic TVs didn't bother to broadcast them). These numbers do not include 3-4 m people who saw PBS, which put the number a bit more than 40m for each. Some articles report the 37-38m, others report the 40m.
This has to be a great omen. I think a part of it too is that the American people had to see it for themselves because they knew they could not trust the Democrats’ media to report it correctly in the MSM.
Well, we still have work to do, and no counting chickens...
And so it begins, ordinary people doing extraordinary things, rising up, challenging the status quo, and taking back this country at all levels.
Wow. I can’t believe so many people watched when we didn’t even use a stadium or have Roman columns or anything like that. ;-)
You’ve nailed it. The media, in a frenzy to destroy Sara Palin has had the exact opposite effect. They managed to pique the curiosity of virtually every single American of voting age who has ANY interest in the campaign. They tuned in, probably to see her fail and instead were witness to the launching of what looks to be a stellar political career.
What a grand example this was of the “Law of unintended consequences”
Palin IS a leader, or appears to be one at this point judging by her past accomplishments and her way of carrying and expressing herself. And although polls are only a snapshot in time they are at least for the time accurate if properly done.
As for the individuals subject to the polling, the candidates, well some of them allow their actions to be governed BY the poll results while others, the leaders, are the ones who DRIVE the poll results.
I believe it obvious which candidates fit into each catagory.
Exactly right!!! It is not enough to simply defeat the empty suit and all he stands for. The defeat must be resounding, overwhelming and crushing. The message sent needs to be unequivocal, saying we expect, no, demand government do what is supposed to do, keep us safe, provide the infrastructure we need and then get the hell out of the way and let us be all we can be. McCain and Palin can indeed win and win big if they keep on message and don't fall back to pandering to the 'give me something for nothing" crowd.
More attention should be called to the fact that BET, Telemundo and Univision didn’t even carry the Republican convention. Univision, incidentally, is owned by NBC.
A definite attempt is being made to prevent blacks and Hispanics from getting information about the GOP candidates. Interestingly, the Hispanic viewership for the GOP convention was quite high (higher than for the Dems, IIRC), even though they did not have coverage on either of the networks that are directed at Hispanics.
I have heard rumors that Hispanics are not thrilled with Obama - don’t forget, not all Hispanics are living in poverty in ghettos in LA, and even those that are actually want something else for their kids. Obama gives such a negative message that I that I suspect many immigrants take one listen and think, “Uh-uh. He’s not what I came to America for.” Palin and McCain, on the other hand, are positive, hopeful, and encourage the feeling that people can really accomplish something without waiting for the government to give it to them. And that’s why people come to this country in the first place.
Telemundo is owned by NBC.
BET is owned by Viacom which owned CBS until 2005.
Univision is still independent.
