A Fairleigh Dickinson-PublicMind poll out Tuesday shows Sen. Barack Obama apparently leading by 6 points in New Jersey, 47-41 percent. That's down from the 16-point lead Obama enjoyed here in an FDU poll taken in June.

For anything other than a absolute blow-out, NJ will stay with the Donks. If the blow-out is that huge, NJ will not matter.

The only times NJ goes red are landslide elections like 1984. And then it's not needed. The only reason to come to NJ or NY is to raise money, and he doesn't need it and can't take it now.

Fool’s gold undoubtedly.

Perhaps. But you want McCain to lose. So why should anyone take your advice seriously?

“As a long-time resident of New Jersey, I would love to, just once, cast a vote in a Presidential Election that was not in vain.”

Same here but just change that to Michigan........it’s so frustrating.

Good point. But he may not have to campiagn there to win the state. I really see Obama becoming unhinged, his campaign falling apart. And McCain and Palin are in full sync, getting better every day. The final straw for obama will be the debates. Based upon all that we’ve seen from him, I can’t imagine him doing anothing but making a fool of himself. He’ll be trying for one hail mary sound-bite after anoter in the debates, won’t work against McCain, he’s too smart for that.

This means - that New Jersey is VERY close to becoming a “purple” state, and may even become competitive within the next seven weeks.

Story developing....

My guess is that history will be repeated. NJ will be a teaser in the polls, but in the end a heartbreaker for the ‘Pubs. It always looks competitive, but in the end the ‘Rats come home and pull away for a comfortable win. So, this time, GOP, don't take the bait. Stay out of ‘Ratland (NJ).

My personal political preferences don’t cloud or influence my judgment. I am not voting for McCain or Obama because I cannot in good conscience be complicit in voting for someone whose policies will destroy this country and wreck our economy. I will still vote a straight GOP ticket as I have for over 40 years, but for the first time, I will leave the office of President blank.

McCain could really have a chance in NJ if he gets out to Passaic, Teaneck, Fairlawn, LAKEWOOD, etc, and talks to the Jewish community.

Does NJ report GOP leads until Newark belches out the Dem vote at the end of the night?

I agree, in the debates, McCain will be a fox in the hen house. He is crafty in his ability to undercut his opponents position.

His long Senate experience will prove very valuable, since the Independent voting public weighs much of it’s decision on how well the candidates do in the debates.

Add to that, Obama’s sheer inability to connect two separate concepts together without a speech writer or a teleprompter, he will brash and downright stupid responses that McCain will rip to shreds. Which is why McCain does extremely well in “Town Hall” formatted debates.

Good point about the town hall format, I wish that’s how all the debates were going to be conducted. But you know, if all McCain does is smiles, shakes his head and says my friends a thousand times during the debates, he’ll come off as a master debater compared to obama.

Is NJ the 56th or 57th state?

The State to watch out for is Wisconsin. Lots of Hockey Moms in Wisconsin. While Grandholm and Killpatrick will hurt Obama in Michigan, there is still a huge population of African Americans in Detroit. Of Which 140% of them vote in every election. Wisconsin doesn't. The other two are Washington and Oregon. While I feel Washington will get tighter I do not think they can over come left-Seattle. Oregon is a better possibility. Alaska has cultural ties to both states. A host of Alaskan commerical fisherman a reside in Washington/Oregon. Side note what happened to Iowa? Bush Carried it in '04. McCain is losing by 15 points ???

Iowa — 1. McCain doesn’t support ethanol 2. Obama lived in the state for months before the caucus w/ his “Iowa or nothing” strategy 3. Half of Illinois has taken up residence in IA.

I learned yesterday how lowering the voting age to 18 reduced voter turnout because a lower percentage of the 18-20 group voted than the general population.

NJ teases every time but never actually gets competitive in the end.

Exactly, and there's no reason to think things won't be different this time. There are too many people here who pull the lever for the D on habit cultivated 2-3 generations ago.

If McCain actualy won New Jersey the Left would be screaming that the election was stolen (now there would be a surprise, I know).

If Obama tanks that badly I’ll give my December paycheck to the Republicans.

Palin can do a ‘double-punch’ visit into PA/NJ by going to Philly suburbs and come right over the bridge into South Jersey (Camden / Burlington / Gloucester counties) and get a large segment of the Independent female voting demographics within these two states real easy.

Ahhh, New Jersey.

The state where the government thinks its citizens are too stupid to pump their own gasoline.

On second thought, they may just be right about some of them.
