Miles To Go(Peggy Noonan)
Wall Street Journal ^ | 9/12/08 | Peggy Noonan

Democrats, hit reset. Accept the fact that the race has changed utterly, that you're up against a ticket that has captured the public imagination. Now you must go out and recapture it.

Out of the shirtsleeves, into the suit. Stop prowling the stage with what looks like Phil Donahue's old mic. No more scattered, listless riffs; back to the podium and the prepared—and focused—speech. Campaign as a duo, Obama-Biden, together again. Obama alone looks like he's part of nothing.

You must aim your fire at the top of the ticket, John McCain, and not at this beautiful girl, Sarah Palin, about whom you can do nothing.

You can never kill her now. Forget it. She can hurt herself, but in terms of Democratic attacks she is bulletproof. You made her that—she wasn't that way when she walked in

I just hate it when talking heads that should be on our side give in to the Dem narrative. Peggy was wrong during the attack against Palin and she’s eating crow right now.

I don’t feel bad for her. You appear on MSNBC, you have to know what kind of channel you are getting into bed with.

John Locke on Lost: I was wrong... words to live by Peggy.

Instead of addressing the Dem’s as “you” throughout the article shouldn’t she have written “we”?

Wow. The knee jerk responses here are something else.

This is a good article. I think she’s right. Spot-on, perhaps.

Go back and read it again.

Not to mention, “Whoopi” is about the dumbest hammer I've ever heard fall out of the box and go ‘thud.’

Give her a break - Peggy was on the fainting couch after the DNC convention and missed the Palin hoopla.

Peggy's recent columns make one wonder if she is not auditioning to become the distaff David Gergen.

She does however accurately describe Governor Palin at this point as bulletproof but not essentially because she was so crudely and ineptly libeled. We must understand that Palin's appeal is essentially moral and only secondarily political.

Sarah Palin and her baby are living reproaches Barak Obama. Her very being exposes Obama for the mountebank he is. She is the real deal and so transparent that people instantly recognize her to be authentic. He is a sham and her very presence utterly diminishes him on a moral scale. More, are our moral power illuminates the moral power of John McCain. This the left does not understand.

Applying this understanding to the Charlie Gibson interview, Sarah was not harmed at all because there was nothing which fundamentally undermined America's judgment that she is authentic and morally true. It does not matter if Sarah Palin is unsure about the Bush Doctrine-so is most of America-that is not the dimension which bonds her to the people. They want to know that her heart is right and that her mind is clear. They know that no one can foresee the challenges the country will face. They are not putting a fact checker one heartbeat away from the presidency. They are putting a human being with a soul in office. They want someone whose character they can trust, because they know that it is character alone that counts when the phone rings at 3 a.m.

Consider that in the context of Obama's remarks about putting lipstick on a pig. The public knows what he was up to and they don't like it. But worse, it scares them because it betrays something about Obama's character which has ominous shadings at 3 a.m.

“the snobbery of it, the meanness of it, reminded the entire country, for the first time in a decade, what it is they don't like about the left. Really, America had forgotten. Mr. Obama’s friends reminded them. Unforgettably.”

Peggy Nooonan is dead on accurate with this quote and makes a few good points. However, the article reflects her lack of understanding about what is really going on. Peggy Noonan was very critical of the the choice of Governor Palin to be VP(not up front of course but only when she thought she wouldn't be heard). She does not acknowledge how good a choice Governor Palin is and how her friends in the MSM are going all out to destroy her.

I agree. Funny how four years ago, Peggy seemed to do everything she could to help get Bush elected because she realized the seriousness of the election. This time, she’s on the sidelines...dissing... yes dissing our candidates.

I used to look forward to her articles until the open mike shot at the RNC.

She’s obviously not pushing for our team this time....and that bothers me...

Obama is not ready for the presidency. Anyone who eargerly votes for him is out of touch with reality.

While it's not a horrible article, it's underlying tone is really not about Obama or Palin. It's about the almighty media (Peggy included) and their power. She builds up to this and then sums up it up in the last paragraph.

The mainstream media may themselves come down on Mr. Obama. They like him, but if he doesn't come back and make this a race, he'll embarrass them. They just might be on the edge of getting angry, having been left exposed. Forget what Mr. McCain and Mrs. Palin can do to Mr. Obama: If he embarrasses the media, they'll kill him.
